If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

i don't see the problem except for some minor bellyaching from a few.

Like from you...........you mean.

I have dvdr's full of payware for MSTS, RailFail & Trainz.

Yours with the attitude you take, can stay off my machine at any cost.

I got curious the other day and wondered what my efforts as a content creator would be worth before I retired.

I Gmax for 7 to 8 hours a day during the week and 10 to 12 hours on weekends. Taking the lower values thats 55 hours a week. I used to make $28.00 an hour at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft so thats $1,540 a week or $80,080 a year. Adding up how long I've been doing this and the total is around $338,800. Yo Auran - make the check out to Benjamin R. Dorsey please, lol.

Im sure most content creators ocasionally make items for others but I suspect I'm one of the extreamly few that make items almost exclusivly for others. I don't expect to get paid for any of my efforts other then a thank you from the gent I made it for and the satisfaction of making Trainzers happy with something they can use on a route. Download counts are important to me of course. They tell me I made something folks like and gives me an indication as to what to make next. The only other thing I expect is for Auran to keep the system working. Unfortunately for the last 4 months the process has degenerated into an absolutely unworkable disaster. Its gotten so frustrating that if I could figure out a way to bulk-upload all my items to a different site (TPR perhaps) and force Auran to delete them from the DLS I'd be sorely tempted. In reality I'd rather not as the DLS is the better location but only because the TPR site nice as it is doesn't get the exposure the DLS gets.

As I said in a different forum - if Auran is trying to get rid of me just say so. I'll leave.

hey guy, i never complained about anything. you must be confusing my posts with someone else's. i said there was enough to make everyone happy, and nobody should have to change what they want to do for anyone else. there was no attitude except your own. lighten up. you want to have a problem with me thats fine. you dont want to get any jointedrail content, thats fine too. so you have dvrs full of payware...yay for you. if you think you are that important you only flatter yourself. how about you stop trying the personal attack route and just leave it alone. you dont like my posts then dont read 'em.

Trainz has many followers, because it can be inexpensive it appeals to a number of people who live on a limited income. The UK and Eastern Europe are home to a fair number.

Because it is a game where you don't have to interact with people it also appeals to people who might not win the most sociable and well balanced person of the week award. They can quite often misread posts and read into them something that wasn't there.

Do these people matter, well some of my DLS content is directly as the result of one of them popping out in her wheelchair and taking specific photographs to be used as textures as a result of a request from myself.

Another entered the payware world when laid off. Made some very nice payware as well.

"its tough, but thats life." Unfortunately is true, life isn't nice sometimes, especially when you have little control over it and the employer you started life with no longer exists or took a idiot decision that had a large impact. Taking into account limited incomes and less than perfect social skills of others before posting might make the forum a more comfortable place to be in.

Trainz is a game and the forums are one of the places where we communicate. Some of my posts may seem hard but they normally are to identify and resolve issues and concerns.

Hi Everybody.
Hate to interrupt a good flaming and bashing session, but while everybody's talking about content creators and payware does anybody know of any GOOD British DMUs of the 1970s era for 2010. Perfectly happy to pay providing the assets are of good quality with passenger views etc. I for one understand that that's the way the world works as I don't know how to create it myself you pay someone else who has the ability and expertise to do it for you, just the same as I do for someone to service my car.

A greedy company allowed it to bolster sales and profit and continue to allow it by forcing it to work as long as it is packed into their JA file.

If "greedy" means "willing to release new versions of Trainz, even though it's not a particularly good return on investment", then yes- guilty as charged.

The only ones forced to adhere to their new standards are the contributors so they can rip them off and shove that content into the next version.

We don't rip anyone off. We're very clear as to our policies regarding distribution of content, and we allow users to bypass our content distribution methods completely if you are unhappy with our policies.

As far as payware my position stands. I have no problem paying someone for their time and effort. Its up to me to purchase or not.

Indeed it is. This has been forgotten too many times on both sides of this "payware debate".

kind regards,

chris

Rant on

Sending disks that people had paid for might be a good start.

Rant off

Well, I think it's pretty clear that we actually do that. :-)

In all seriousness, if you have a problem with an order going missing, don't hesitate to get in contact with helpdesk. They're still a few days behind, so you may not get an overnight response, but give them a clear description of the problem that you're having and I'm sure that they'll get you sorted out in fairly short order.

Ha ha ha I have been sending one, once a day for the last week but they never seem to appear in the ticket list.

I think Senator Conroy is blocking my internet on purpose

That would make things awkward, yes..

I've passed this post on to some Auranites who may be able to able to work things out for you. If things are not resolved in the next few days, please shoot me a PM here on the forums and i'll follow it up again.

kind regards,

No sure if this is what you are looking for; - http://trainz.banal.net/catalog/pages/UnitedKingdom-Diesel-DMU.html - http://www.auran.com/trainz/downloa...chID=1&DLS_TopListing=0&SearchCriteria=36550:
Cheers, Mac...

Thanks for that Meatloaf, But I am looking for DMUs created or updated for 2010. A couple I have downloaded do not seem to run well or not at all as they do not seem to have been made compatible with 2010.

Thanks again though

Point of subject

This is so frustrating!
I have been spending hours sifting through all of the content in TS2010 and deleting or disabling what I cannot use because either it is listed in a language I do not understand, or it is totally inappropriate for my region.
Now, I'm not complaining that some assets are named in a foreign (to me) language. I understand that there are a lot of non-English speaking people who love Trainz and develop some good content for it.
And I'm not complaining about assets that don't fit my region.

What I am upset about is the mis-naming and mis-categorizing of so much content, that it makes the good filters that have been built into TS2010 (and earlier versions to some extent) less useful than they could be.
There is a lot of duplicate content because it comes up with different names.
Sometimes it is impossible for me to find what I am looking for because it is not named properly (whether it is in English or not).

While I have learned a little German and am able to know what I am looking at by the preview image in Surveyor, It is very frustrating to scroll through such a long list while trying to enjoy building a route.

So, what I am doing is disabling any content I have no intention of ever using. This is very time consuming, since I really need to be in Surveyor to see what the asset looks like. I then place the assets I want to disable in the picklist, then go back to CM and view in main list and disable, then finally clear the picklist and go back to Surveyor to start where I left off.

What I will get eventually is a much shorter list of assets that I am going to use on my routes.
Of course, if I ever have to re-install TS, then I'm screwed. But I keep very good backups, made every week or more often if needed, so I can restore at any time without having to re-install.

I wish that content developers would use the guidelines to place their assets in the correct category, and use sensible naming criteria.
Auran has provided the means to do this, but it seems that a lot of developers just don't pay attention to it.

Once I have selected what I want to keep in my listing, I am probably going to go through it and rename anything that I can. I have to clone the assets to do this, then disable the original.

It is a shame that Trainz, with so much content available does not yet have a truly organized system of cataloging it.
I think if Auran wanted to, they could force anyone who uploads content to DLS to properly categorize it.
I think this would make a lot of the content creators unhappy, but in the end, it would make a lot of Trainz users a lot happier, and probably sell a lot more copies of TS2010.

As for me, TS2010 is my last version of Trainz, unless these and many other improvements are included with the next version.

I hope that I didn't offend anyone, but if I did, then maybe you should take a look at what I am talking about. I think that my request is valid and reasonable.

Thanks

This is like what I stated in the first post, I do not know anything about 2010, but apparently Wassner does. I have read that catigories have been changed in 2010, so assets made for standards prior will now be seen as errors. The assets were not made wrong by the creator, Auran's new programming is what made them wrong for the latest edition. I also have been told that 2010 does not want "thumbnails" listed in the config file. I redid my assets sveral times to meet the standards required for the DLS, which insisted on the thumbnails as I understood it. I think my assets all work well for versions prior to 2010 and I am wondering if I remove these "thumbnails", if the assets will still be correct for 2004 and beyond, including the probable changes in versions after 2010. If anyone knows about these tag changes, please advise us creators of what is best to do for changes to our creations.

I have TONS of perfectly good content from Trainz 1.3 onwards which works and does not display errors or warnings in TS2010 or TS2009. Every single error I have corrected on scenery items (I'm not so familiar with rolling stock configs) was incorrect in the version it was intended for. It may not have failed to work, but it wasn't correct. Much of the blame for apparently shifting standards is down to Auran's appalling error checking - I had to correct MANY DLS assets in TO to get them to work at all. Now they have applied the standards that should have applied from day one, there is some inevitable pain. I'm disappointed that there has been too little easily obtainable guidance, and no apparent progress on correcting faulty items on the DLS.

It's not so much that the goalposts have moved, it's more that both players and referee can see where they are now, and they are a lot closer together than most of us thought...

On another note, I think that Auran's checking actually depends on the build tag. It MAY be the case that a perfectly good assets at build 1.3 will work fine in TS2010, but it will object if build 3.0 is used. This may be what you're read about and were concerned about.

You don't go into any specifics that I can really confirm or deny, but this sounds wrong to me. I think you may have been misled.

I also have been told that 2010 does not want "thumbnails" listed in the config file.

Nothing has changed with the thumbnails tag. I think our last change to this functionality was in TRS2006. The correct usage is documented on our wiki.

Some mistakes that we commonly see with thumbnails are for people to mis-spell the keyword "thumbnails" or accidentally try to place it inside some other container rather than at the top level of the config file.

The Answers!

Finally the answer! I have asked for these guidelines in many threads and now you have given the right path, thank you very much! http://online.ts2009.com/mediaWiki/index.php5/Main_Page
As for the Config File Format, there has been much diveristy in these in the past, the guide for 2004 was not very thorough. Can you guide me to a template of the standards for config files in your wiki? If there are none, this should be added there. Also a link to the wiki should be added the Trainz Webs "Auran Sites" tool bar.

A decent HO model can cost well over $100.00 USA. I don't think a $10 or $20 cost for a well crafted digital model is really all that bad...

Sorry to backtrack, but I've just got to this thread having been busy doing what Trainz was intended for - using it. I've also been taking screenshots and attempting GMax. If I ever crack it I will upload and share stuff for free.

Now, $10 or $20 dollars for payware?

When I was working I had more income and little time. Now I have the time, but little income.

There is no way I could, or would, pay this amount. Up to $5 -maybe, if it was of reasonable quality.

Regarding real models, $100 seems good value if thats what you want and can afford it. But to compare these with digital models is like comparing oranges with tin tacks!

Real models are individually designed in miniature, tooled up, factory made, boxed, shipped etc. The digital item is made once, generated from start to bank balance, probably by one person, with no need for his/her rear end to leave its seat!

Try looking at some of the DLS download numbers. I saw one yesterday which has more than 2.5 million downloads. Yes, I know its freeware, and was a trackside static item, but the potential earning power for some of this stuff is enormous. Gravy train anyone?

Lets have cheaper good quality payware. Its likely to fly off the cybershelves.

A quick search on the wiki for 'config file' gives this link which discusses the basics of the config file structure. From there, we can follow the links to this section which describes each asset kind in detail.

Also a link to the wiki should be added the Trainz Webs "Auran Sites" tool bar.

Agreed. We're working on improving the accessibility of this information.
