Idyllic English country branch terminus: Asburton

Looks superb Paul. I'm seriously tempted to DL it and modernise it slightly for my own use.

Paul, these pictures are absolutely stunning and a real compliment (and complement) to razor's brilliant layouts. So the obvious question - will it be going on the DLS?

Hi Nickie

These are available from the content section of the Settle and Carlisle add on website.

http://www.settleandcarlisle.co.uk/

You will find them in the Additional Wagons and Additional Scenery sections. The wagon is the 20t Lowmac which will probably have missing dependencies if you don't have the SnC add on. The scenery items are the Coalyard items. As far as I can remember only the wagons, coaches and locomotives require dependencies from the SnC so all of the scenery items and signals should work ok.

Regards

Brian

Paul, I really like the look of your Asburton line (this is not a comment on the original Asburton, since I haven't seen it). So very English. But, I've got 7 unknown dependencies by "kemplen":
Unknown Location: <kuid:84609:28373>
Unknown Location: <kuid:84609:28375>
Unknown Location: <kuid2:84609:50186:1>
Unknown Location: <kuid2:84609:50188:1>
Unknown Location: <kuid2:84609:50190:1>
Unknown Location: <kuid2:84609:50192:1>
Unknown Location: <kuid2:84609:50193:1>

Any idea where I can find those?

Actually, this is a comment on the original Ashburton as I haven't uploaded my version. ;)

As Brian (Kennilworth) explains above, these Kemplen assets are part of the Settle and Carlisle add-on for TS09/10/12, which is a fantastic piece of work and worth acquiring. As his suggests, try their website to see if you can acquire the assets, though bear in mind you may have to buy the add-on itself to be sure of having all the dependencies. Pleased you like the look of the screenshots.

Is the enhanced route available for download anywhere?

Thanks John

Thanks guys. I hadn't thought about uploading it yet. I guess I'll need to discuss with Razor as it's his original work (though about 7 of the 9 baseboards could be argued to be primarily my work).

Oh, I'm sorry. The version I downloaded seemed to be brand new, so I just assumed it was yours.

But, thank you Paul & Brian for pointing me towards the wonderful SnC, which I already own. Those missing assets must be some of the few, I haven't already downloaded ;)

Btw, hope your version will be available some day too.

Now for more screenshots.

First, a digression before we move from Windrush to Windmill End halt.

I mentioned Castle Sidings and signal box earlier, without pointing out the ruins of Windrush Castle (on the hill above the village and station), or the local manor house - Knowle Manor. Here's a picture of all three:

Now, back to the branch. Leaving Windrush, trains pass the Oil Depot and Siding and then tackle the very severe Windrush curve for which a strict 15mph limit applies:

Having crossed the river, the line breaks out into open countryside. Here a view back up the branch with the Pridhamsleigh water tower looming in the background.

The Greenvale Dairy factory is the major employer in the district, alongside agriculture, and has its own passing loop and sidings reached from Dairy Junction. Like Sanderson's this was a major redevelopment during the war which extended the railway's facilities and traffic. Here are two views, of the rails extending to the factory from the branch and a milk train shunting at the factory itself.

Just beyond the dairy factory, is Windmill End halt - added during the war to provide for the increasing number of workers at the factory itself and surrounding farms being brought in from nearby towns. Next to the overbridge can be seen the Plough Inn - well known hostelry for thirsty farm and dairy workers!

A refuge siding has been provided at Windmill End, but about ten years ago a set of disused wagons were 'stored' (ie. dumped) there severely reducing the siding's usefulness.

A view from the fields. Sadly the old GW pagoda has been locked up and replaced by a very nasty open corrugated iron shelter instead. A sign of progress?

And, yes, there is a windmil at Windmill End!

Finally, leaving Windmill End, on the other side of the overbridge, the rear of the Plough has a set of steps down to the crossing boards over the track, so the thirsty traveller doesn't have to go too far to get from the platform to the bar and back again!

Finally for tonight, a view of the full layout with the key elements identified. It's 9 baseboards and about 3.5 miles of running. Coming next - hopefully a few trains!

Thanks again to Razor for inspiring me with his original Ashburton and Windrush layouts.

This is truly stunning. The lineside vegetation in particular is the best I've seen as a representation of UK summer- everything blends perfectly.

Thanks Rumour, I'm very much looking forward to running your Cravens down the branch (I'll have to work up an excuse as to how they made it to Devon!)

Good news everyone - Razor's been in touch and he's happy for me to upload the layout. However, that means a lot of work for me - where did I get all of the dependencies from? And some of them are payware - notably the JVC trackside splines that I think make a great impact, so I'm loath to take them out. Also I've created a number of revised assets under my own kuid, so I'll have to get permission to upload them or that'll be more missing dependencies. Much of the flora is Pofig's which is at least not payware, but it does mean going off the DLS to get it.

Anyway, I'm going to take my time and get it right. Crikey, can't believe I might actually do an upload to the DLS!

I wouldn't worry if its payware or not or where it comes from. If the kuids are awkward to get someone will find an alternative that can be switched in.

Thanks John

I think I promised a few trains.....First, a class 14xx loco working light engine down the branch passes Windmill End and approaches the overbridge:
30class4xxsteamsthroughWindmillEnd.jpg
A local train heading up the branch (propelled by another 14xx class) rounds the curve on the approach to Windrush:
31ArrivingatWindrush.jpg
And then pulls into Platform 2. Looks like the guy with the cases will need to get a move on!
32ArrivingatWindrush3.jpg
After leaving Windrush and passing through the tunnel, the local passses Castle Sidings:
33PassingCastleSidingsSB.jpg
And here's a shot of WC Class loco Wadebridge steaming through Dairy Junction on an excursion from Waterloo:

Note how all locos in these shots are by Skipper1945 - thanks George!

That's great news that razor has approved the upload. This route looks likely to set a new benchmark for UK branchlines in Trainz.

Paul, these must easily rank among the best shots I've seen. There are only a few other builders (who will remain nameless) who can create something this good looking. Keep it up.

Hi all, thanks for this very strong encouragement - it helps me to redouble my efforts to get this up to the DLS even though there's much work to be done. I'm currently engaged with rodding for points (surely one of the most tedious bits of work you can do in Trainz?).

I'm hoping to send a cdp of the layout 'as is' to Razor for him to take a look at and see what he thinks. I'll also need to get on and seek approval for the revised assets I've created under my own Kuid.

Onward, upward!

Hi Paul.

Looking forward to see your route :) Razor's original route is a fine, though rather small, start. I want more! :udrool:

Why the monochrome image, btw? To knock down enthusiasm? ;) Won't work.

Cheers, Nickie

Just and attempt to get that authentic 'black and white' 1950s look - maybe it didn't work!

BTW. I've removed the overbridge from Windrush - it didn't fit in as it's a green SR bridge by Jayholland and I rather feel that a rural backwater like Windrush wouldn't get an overbridge anyway.

Hopefully more pics soon.

Paul

Paulsw2,
Any chance you could publish a list of the payware items used and those not on the DLS (as long as it's not too long a list)? - I wouldn't mind sourcing them in advance. Thanks.
