I have a Serious Problem

Getting Older :)
Well I think it is serious :'(

The other day while I was following instructions on how to use PEV's Texture2TGA program. While it worked I was not sure about something with the files in the folder. I can not remember exactly what, but I tried looking at a file. My computer said that it is not sure of how to Open the File and offered me the chance of searching the net or to look at other programs on my computer. I selected to look at other programs on my computer out of curiosity and yes I know what happened to the cat :(. I had a screen similar to this one below;
problem1m.jpg

Somehow I hit Adobe Reader 7.0 as above and that changed all the similar/same files into an Adobe File that 2009 obviously does not understand, as below;
problem2uy.jpg

As you can see above, all the icons for Adobe are there for the same files and now when ever I open a file in 2009, those files are changed to Adobe Files. As you can see I also tried a few other ways to reverse this but nothing worked. I have even reinstalled 2009 and this has not solved my problem. I also looked at using a "Restore Point" but that did not quite work, it stuffed up my newly reinstalled 2009 so I had to reinstall again. This now means I have no Restore Points go back more then a few days, actually the only ones there are for yesterday.

How can I change my settings or whatever, to stop Windows converting the images to Adobe? In the above image image I would really like to remove all of the selections such as Adobe Reader 7.0, Infanview, Paint Shop Pro 6, Texture2TGA, and Internet Explorer.

Hope someone can help with this stuff up :(

EDIT: Sorry about the large images, I can not now change them :(

In your last screen the menu that appears with "Open With" has a selection at the bottom "Choose Program". Select that and you will get a window that lets you brouse and find the program that you want to open the files. Also at the bottom of that window will be a check box that asks you if you want to use your selection for future files. Check the box and it will prevent Adobe from capturing all your files.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Earl, I tried that and it will not work. The content I am using is a Built-In item, kuid2:86661:9210690:1 / Camp Goods.

I also have a copy of this file in 2004 so I can see what it once was like. Normally when I open a *.tga or *.bmp it will open in Paint Shop Pro with out a problem. Now if I try to open the files in Paint Shop Pro I am told "The Specified File cannot be Identified as a Supportive Type". If I look at the properties of the file I am told that it is a "texture" file of Adobe, though now after trying your example it is now a "texture" file of Paint Shop Pro :(.

Here is the original contents of that item;

and now compared to my stuffed up 2009 item;

You can see they are different, the "barrel1.texture" file is not longer there.

I might PM PEV and the person who had the example of how to use his programs to see if they can help, I'll just refer them to this thread.

If any one else has an idea on what I can do, your help would be much appreciated.

Strange, I just tried looking at a few items I have uploaded from the DLS and they work fine. It is only with items that are built-in and I open for "Edit in Explorer".

If I do not open them then I would not have a problem. Still not right though :(

Auran have set things so that builtin items do not show errors even if they are faulty. When you open, edit and then commit, it removes the 'protection' and then CM3 finds the faults. It is not a bug, it has been designed this way ever since TRS2006.

Thanks Peter, I understand that. Its the way they are showing if I open them. For my first example with Camp Goods I have now imported it into 2009 from 2004 and it still does not show up even after opening and committing it a couple of times.

However, on a few other Built-in items I have just played with they will still show even though one is showing red in Surveyor.

Strange and as I said any imported content does not seem to have a problem apart from the normal errors and warnings.

Maybe its just that one item.

One thing you should start by doing is stop hiding file extensions for "known" file types. In this case I think the files you're trying to open in Paint Shop Pro that it can't open are the .texture files. Because they're associated with a program you don't see the .texture anymore.

Do this:
1. Open an Explorer window and go to Tools|Options
2. Click the View tab.
3. Find and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types" in the big list of options on that tab.
4. Click OK.

Now your TGA files should show up as filename.tga and your .texture files will show up as filename.texture and you can tell which is which.

Thanks for that EdrickV, they are now showing as Texture Files.

Still a strange situation though, makes me feel a little more careful when playing around with some programs.

Thanks again for your help.
