I am not allowed to edit my route any more!

I am running an Extended Database Repair right now.

It does not matter if I save the Route under the same name or a new name.
Also note I am trying to modify a Route and not a Session.

My hard drive is also running low on space. 64 GB remaining out of 500 GB total.
Should I update Windows and run my usual security scans? Should I run my Windows
Registry repair program also?

Is it also possible to reinstall Trainz on a larger external HDD and run it from there?


Can some DS assets possibly be infected with malware?

You will need to manually commit the asset in Content Manager from the Open For Edit tab.

For future reference, make sure you have set Trainz to run as administrator.

Let me put it this way:
I am running the game in Win 8.1, always as Administrator, and I have never had this problem.

Not saying it will solve the problem, but I never had it.

I have found in the past that sometimes trainz seems to put a limit on the number of saves you can do. I open the route + session and save as with a new name. I then save the old one to CDP and delete the old route. Open the new route and the config file to replace the name with the old one and I can then continue saving alterations.

It's worth giving it a try as it gets round permission related problems like the error in the original post.

If you are running low on HD space it might be worth checking in the Launcher Screen Options/Developer how many backups you are showing. If this is set to the default 7 it will chew up HD space like billyho and possibly not leave enough free for virtual memory which might be needed to run the save process.

The advice already given about checking folder permissions is also sound. Also don't leave it too long between saves during editing sessions.

Running Ext. Db. Repair seemed to help. I can now save Routes/Sessions under new file names after editing.

I have a habit of changing names after so many edit moves, like a couple hundred or so. I use the alphabet, Revision A, B, C and so forth. And back up Routes two letter names into the past for good measure in case the most recent edited route ever gets corrupt data or malware or I get into real trouble by badly botching up the current route name (letter) I am working on in Surveyor.

Instead of doing this number / multi-save thing and still running the risk of loosing everything on a serious database crash, do this:
- After a day of "work" (or a few hours or whatever), close the game
- Start "Content Manager" (found under content in the start-up screen)
- Find your latest save (I made a special filter that only shows my own local routes)
- Select it, right-mouse-click and click on "Save to CDP".
- Save it on a different HD and give it the name of your route together with the date of today (in YYYY-MM-DD format for easy sorting)

If you now ever ****-up or actually lost something that can not be restored with an extended database repair, you actually still have your work.

That is because it is a Windows setting

Can't recall how it works in other Windows versions, but in Win8.1 you right-click on the short-cut and select "run as Administrator".
You can change the settings in Windows to always run that short-cut as Administrator, but can't find that so quickly.

Same in Win7 and Win10, to set permanently right click, Properties, Compatibility, Tick run as Administrator, apply.
