Hudson River Route (Warning Large Images)

We see very little variety on the Riverline. Most of the time we will see CSX Dash 9s or EMD Wide Cabs. Very boring!
Step back in time a little... I think that is the main reason I prefer modeling a different era. Trainz is a great time machine. Most modern locos look too much alike. I would bore myself trying to spot the differences. They still amaze me, but not like the 1st generation diesels, or anything steam for that matter.

That's why I'm making this route, which is a WIP by the way, temporally abiguous. The two screenshots above illustrate this. There are assets from different eras present...the lift bridge at Peekskill, for instance. It was there in NYC days but has long since been replaced by a boring concrete slab of a bridge. I haven't used the contemporary one. The lift bridge is much more fun. If you want to make the route specific to a particular time period, all you really have to do is change the cars...well...and maybe the nuclear power plant. :D

I don't know the answer to that question. It's about halfway done. Half of a very large project, however, is still a lot. :D

Hi Fred,

Fantastic shot as always: I LOVE the detail you put in! Perhaps you might want to consider swapping out the bogeys on some of those boxcars though? I still think it's a great shot. Your route looks like a lot of fun to drive/be a passenger on!

Keep up the great work!

Zorronov,

The nuclear power plant is called Indian Point Nuclear Facility. From what I hear (not sure on how true it is however) if it were to explode, the safe zone would begin at Hyde Park (a little north of Poughkeepsie). I live about 10 miles north of Hyde Park in Rhinebeck, so no worries for me! :D

By the way, if you ever decide to extend it further north I have photos from all over Kingston, Milton, Selkirk and so forth so if you need reference just let me know and I'll give you what I have! I would also be more than happy to go out and get some reference photos for if it was around my area ( there are very interesting cliff formations on the Riverline that makes it even more unique). I have alot of photos online already so here they are, feel free to use them for reference anybody who might them.http://www.flickr.com/photos/jcataquet

Thanks Mick! I just got a cool book called "Up River". It's a collection of aerial photos of man-made structures along the Hudson, including a very nice shot of Iona Island, which is the area I'm working on at the mo. So...Iona Island coming up! :)

Just keep the aw some shot's coming Fred,That last one with the JR Stuff is one of the best,I need a new hard drive to keep all these amazing screenies safe lol.
Cheers Mick.

That one's still reduced in size. The original is 1680 x 1050. I suppose I could put that one up instead, but then I might get people complaining about the size of my screenshots. :D

Fred

But then they could check out our Sig's while there here too so i better shut up lol,That last one was perfect Fred. Thanks again.
Cheers Mick.:hehe:

Fred, don't mind me asking. I've recently started using tree splines and am bothered by their constant flickering, as though Trainz cannot decide whether or not to display this tree or that. Do you have the same issue?

Cheerio,
Nicholas.

Nicholas...you didn't say what version of Trainz you are using. They don't work well in Trs2009 or Trs2010. Even in Trs2004 or Trs2006, there is an art to using tree splines effectively...

Rule #1: Keep them away from the tracks! If you get too close to them you will see an odd shifting effect as you pass by. Use individual tree assets, structures...maybe an elephant or two...between the splines and the track to hide it. :hehe:

Rule #2: Avoid placing tree splines in parallel rows. This will produce an unrealistic banding pattern. Criss-cross them. Alternate which end of the spline is placed nearest the track. Stand back and look at them from a distance and at different angles (screenshots...screenshots ;) ). If you see a striped pattern...go to that area of the map and move them around.

Rule #3: Break them up with open areas that include bare patches, rock outcroppings, individual tree assets, shrubs, etc.

They take a lot of work to get them to look acceptable but it can be done. Hope this helps...

Cheers,
Fred
