How to make websites

StorkNest

Stop that, its just silly
Been thinking about doing one, mainly for writing and pictures. I have a book that teaches HTML 4 but never got to use it much, it was published back in 1998. I remember reading at the time XML was on the way to replacing HTML.

What is the current trends/code used to make websites?

I have seen some hosting services say they offer tools to assist.
Haven't been able to keep up with code changes.

Eric,

All the old methods of creating web sites still work.

If you have a web hosting plan then you may prefer to use a server-based blogging system such as WordPress or a full-blown CMS (Content Management System) of which there are numerous, including Dragonfly, Drupal, E107, Joomla, PostNuke, SubDreamer and others.

You might also want to investigate server-based forum systems such as phpBB and wiki systems such as MediaWiki, if either of those are appropriate for what you want to do.

There's very useful introductory information about most of these on Wikipedia (just search for each name). FWIW my advice is to play with a few and see which if any you like. Finding meaningful documentation for CMS systems is often next-door to impossible IMHO.

Personally I prefer to use Notepad and FTP but that's just me being old-fashioned.

Was going to suggest Mozilla but I don't think it is now supported and vulnerabilities perhaps.
Although use it myself

As mentioned have used Mozilla web editor for a few years but just found out that the open source project is continued under the name of sea monkey.

...so just downloaded the latest version of the suite that includes the web editor and see if I can convert my web site pages to it.

Just tried it out and seems very similar to Mozilla.
Opens and edits my web pages OK but not uploaded any to my ISP yet.
Seems OK for ordinary web site and have used the Mozilla version for a good few years now so will start using the modern seamonkey.

To get started window then composer I think.
Quickest then after making a page, copy and past another page with new file name. Insert link and , type whatever with any images you want.
Insert link/image. Format for page title and description, colour, etc.
I use filezilla to upload to ISP.

Thanks for the info. Am mainly looking to start a site for writing and either pictures or I would use links from Imageshack.

NO forums. I have been on enough and still need to trim down my logins from ones I don't use anymore.:hehe:

There are free website makers out there where you don't need code of course nut usually have ads which covers the "free".`
