how to make a cool route

You could move to Antarctica ... and that would be really, way cool !

I could give you much advice ... whether it be a real prototype rail line ... or a fictional freelanced route.
You have to pin it down to an era, or a location ... mountainous, flatland, steam, diesel, electric, trolley, switching, monorail , NG, SG, airport, seaport, undersea route with whecsailor fish and submarines ... etc ...

Here's an idea for you.
If you use the CM program, in the author tab, type fishlips
You should get a load of maps/routes to download that already have the hills made. You will see funny lines on this map which relates to railway tracks (blue lines, I think) red lines (roads, I think) and so on.
When I first started to make a route, I used these as the base on which I added track work and then filled in the roads and scenery. Try it out and see what you think.
Making realistic hills is an more difficult skill for a first time user, so walk before you run.
Btw, Fishlips base routes are U.S.A. routes mostly so maybe one of them is in an area where you live! let us know how you get on.

1. CM is what we call content manager. If you start trainz, it's under the Content button. If you press this, it will open open CM program. I'm patching my version of Trainz2012 at the moment so can not tell you more details until tomorrow night (uk time).

Launch Trainz
Click "Content"
When Content Manager has launched, look in the left hand column for "Search"
Click the + there.
On the left, choose "Author"
and on the right type in "fishlipsatwork"
Click on "Apply"
On the right side you will see a list of all this assets. Most of which (if not all) are "DEM Routes" or routes made using real world "Digital Elevation Maps".

Before you start messing around with DEMs, I suggest you launch Trainz > START and go to Routes > Create New Route. Play around with the tools in Surveyor. You should find it intuitive to:
- lay track
- place objects
- add signals and speed limits
- connect tracks to objects
- raise and lower terrain
- add new baseboards
- straighten track
- add junctions
Once you've mastered the basics, you can start learning more advanced route-making techniques. Good luck to you.
