How to back up?

Hi;
For a while now, I have been backing up my routes by saving the route and session as .cdp.
But today, after installing a fresh TS2009 and the SP2 release candidate, I imported my saved .cdp files, and, besides the route map and related files, I only get what is built-in content. I have to re-download everything that wasn't built-in?

So, now I have saved all the dependencies for the route in the older version, and am about to re-import that .cdp.

In addition to the .cdp backups, I have been doing weekly MS backup (Windows XP Pro, SP3) of the entire TS2009 folder, so that will obviously back up everything, but since I am moving up to a new version, I cannot just restore my previous backup as a whole.

What is the best method of doing backups, if one plans to continue upgrading the TS version when they become available?

Thanks

Hi,

I have always used the Archive feature to back up my content. I have never tried to back up as a CDP, so I am not to sure about that side of things. All my content is in Archive files on another Hard Drive. If my system crashes then I will still have that content and in the same state as when I had/have a crash.

I found Archive files easy to use however it does take some time to reinstall the larger ones. I tend to reinstall my larger ones while doing something else around the house, watching TV, cooking etc.

When 2006 first came out there where a number of threads about archiving content. A general thought in these threads was not to have a very large file, around 500MB was thought to be the best. I have some files going higher then this and all this means is that it takes longer to reinstall. I would not go above 1GB though, there is only so much I can do while waiting for the *&)(*#%@ thing to reinstall :hehe: .

The other thing about archive files and I think with CDP files, is that if you save your content in either one using a route (for example) is that you will/may have duplicate "saved" content. Some routes will have the same content as in another route. So I use a different method to this, and you will need to think about what you need to do. If you have the space and are happy with the duplicate matter, then use your current method.

Hope this helps,

Craig

Thanks for the help. I had completely forgotten about using archives.
Nice thing as well, is that you can easily see which assets have been archived and which not from CM2.
