How do brakes work in Trainz for traditional unbraked British freight? (Loop Line)

Since there's steep grades on the Loop Line, I'm wondering about how the brakes work in Trainz. This is traditional British unfitted freight. In real life, there was a handbrake and vacuum brake on the Locomotive, and a handbrake in the brake van. In Trainz, the locomotive is the independent brake. Does the train brake do nothing, or does it apply the brakes in the brake van? Thanks.

It will apply the brakes on every vehicle in the consist according to whatever the braking parameters are in each vehicle's "enginespec".

As far as I'm aware all the rolling stock included with the PLL uses the N3Vs "default wagon" engine spec, so everything from a four wheel un-braked open to a bogie coach will perform in game as an approximation of an American bogie wagon in terms of drag and braking.

Ideally you want a wagon spec with no brakes, and a then a braked spec for the brakevan (to simulate the guard). The you can drive using the train brakes as then you'll also have the tender brakes assisting you in real life.

The problem with doing that comes when you need to leave wagons in a siding on a gradient because last time I checked the ability to set handbrakes still wasn't working.

There's always a brake van. I have enginespecs for 4 wheel unbraked UK wagons; would it be a bad idea to swap the enginespec out?
