How can I rekindle my interest?

For various reasons I haven't bothered with Trainz for about a year and unfortunately my interest has waned so much that the tracks are rusty and covered with weeds. I opened TRS2009 today and gave up after about 10 minutes. Any suggestions?

Well you could alway always buy TS12 and a few add ons, if the sale is still on here: http://www.simulatorcentral.com/index.php/trainz/special-offers.html they are at bargain prices. You will have to be quick as it's due to end on the 27th, not sure if that's AEST, GMT or what !

Or, you could start a new, or possibly collaborative project, for example extend the ECML route to Malton - Seamer - Scarborough and Seamer - Hull ?

Or look at asset creation using Blender or GMax ...

I agree with itareus, buy TS12 and some extras as treats. You have a super set up for Trainz. I think it may be a case of getting back into it, spend half an hour or so a day There is so much interest in this pastime it's incredable. I sometimes feel as though I'm losing interest but then I find something new. I had a spell collecting UK steam and then found an interest in US steam 1890-1950. At present i have a interest in the big US diesels.
In Yorkshire we have quite a railway heritage. The extended ECML to Newcastle is brilliant, York station has also been improved.
I also like the US and European routes that are now available for TS12 they are first class.
In the past year skipper1945 (George) has re-released a number of his excellent steamers you would be amazed at the quality they are better than most payware, his light pacific (SR spamcan) is especially a work of art - replateable to boot.

Well morning Lewisner,

we stumbled on this one just waking up sipping a good strong Laos coffee and how to start the day other than quick look at the forum and work....
Ning said maybe look at results from fellow trainzers who managed to overcome dips and burn outs by self motivation and looking at route picts like from Gordon, Dermmy and many others and what we post now every day if that not motivates than close it for a longer period and do different things, yes there is life outside Trainz too.

I too have taken a break from Trainz - this one was forced by a change in job (same place new responsibilities) after coming back from "retirement". Paradoxically, the new job gives me more free time but leaves me with less energy and at my age that means more "nap" time. I just have not had the opportunity to get "back into it" - i.e. creating layouts and sessions, and even my time spend on exploring other people's creations has been significantly reduced. I still have the interest, and the ambition, to model real long distant routes from yesteryear but will probably have to wait until my next "retirement" to fulfill them.

My interest was dropping, too, until early last spring when I discovered G-Max wasn't that hard to learn. Since I've started MAKING assets, I've enjoyed it more.

Good luck getting your fire stoked up again.

I second what Dermmy said - go do something else for a while - something that does interest you. Odds are, after a while, you'll get a desire to do something with Trainz again. If not, no big deal - it's a hobby, not a job :)

Being creative takes a lot of extra work sometimes and it's best to step away and come back. I've done that with my music and with Trainz recently. Back in February I had a minor stroke which ruined my piano technique. This put me into a deep funk that I've never really gotten over. My piano, harpsichord, and clavichord have languished for nearly a year since the event. I was about to sell them all and then last Saturday, I sat down and read through Bach's English Suite in F major. The next thing I was at the keyboard for about an hour enjoying the sound of the work on my harpsichord. I was in heaven again and all the mistakes I made were swept under the bridge, and believe me there were plenty of them!

Trainz too sat there untouched. I haven't done much in there either. I've been quite exhausted from work, and also have had a stomach bug which has left me so tired that I've actually fallen asleep at my desk. I did go in one day and do some driving of my own routes and a couple of others by Dave Snow, but I closed my eyes and nodded off. Instead of stopping at a terminal, I ended up pushing through the bumper stops and derailed my train. Last Saturday I finally did some surveying again, and have started a a second rebuild of George Fisher's Gloucester Terminal Railroad. Instead of being a steam/diesel road, I've put up trolley (Tram) poles and turned the route into a small interurban with modern stations. The ROW is now shared by a small switching operation and urban transit line.

My advice is, if you have a PS3 or an XBOX 360, find a decent war game, get on there and start blowing things up, it just takes all the pressure of life away from you, or if you have any Grand Theft Auto games, go and cause as much chaos in the city, I guarantee you will have so much fun, I like to see how many police I can kill in one go, with a rocket launcher...:hehe:

What I am trying to say is, don't pressure yourself into playing Trainz, as you won't enjoy it, go and find something else to do, like train spotting, riding roller coasters all day, skydiving, drunk bowling, underwater karaoke or uphill skiing...:o

There are many other games out there to play on your computer, I like roller coaster tycoon, build your own theme park and watch all the horror bags in the park scream around the fastest tallest roller coaster.

Go and do something else and pop into the forum now and again, to let us know your o.k and having fun, life is for living.

When I feel bored I hook up different locomotives to a monstrous load like 15000 tons of coal and haul it up a steep grade and compare their performance and sound , tweak and crook the books and have fun in general in cab mode or DC . - try that maybe ? :)

Hello lewisner,

How to rekindle your interest in Trainz?

From your question, I can only conclude that you haven't lost a total interest into Trainz, otherwise you wouldn't have asked other trainzers for suggestions.

I can only tell you what schedule I'm presently using.

I have done some splitting in my Trainz activities. What do I mean by splitting?

For my tram/train route I'm doing the following

- I'm spending some hours gathering info about the route, adding some new textures to my route, learn how to build an object ( I tried Gmax, went to Google Sketchup, and will start learning Blender ), take my Digital camara to take some pictures of the real situation ( and taking the tram or train ( just enjoying a day out ).

If I haven't got any inspiration about how to add some specific texture to my route, then I take some time looking at other routes, etc etc etc.

What I no longer do, is being busy adding texture to my route for several hours during each day of the week.

Perhaps my method is a solution for you? If not, why don't you join a group in your town or region? Why not spend some time, giving your knowledge to the very beginners of trainz.

There are several options available, but as others already said - don't force it, just enjoy it.

Hope this helps

Best regards

Kurt

try downloading a new locomotive and a really nice route to go with it and tinker with the horn just kinda start some projects that is a great way to get back into it you might not be that into it at first but then eventually your going to find yourself wanting to stay on the game longer perhaps just a train that you enjoy most try finding it on trainz and that right there might get you where you wish to be.

Get married if you aren't already.

Take a job where you have to work overnight.

Have a few children.

Take a second job to keep the ship afloat.

Catch your wife sleeping around.

Get a divorce.

See your children every other weekend and two weeks a year for holiday.

Watch your ex-wife get remarried to someone whose income is triple yours.

Observe your children growing distant from you as they begin to "appreciate" the big house and the summer vacation home they now enjoy.

Be surprised when they no longer want to visit with you. Examine everything you've done over the past six years that could possibly explain their actions. Dwell upon every detail, cry until you can't possibly cry anymore.

Hire a legal team, and pay them a third of your monthly income for a year. Expect no results, because there will be none. Keep paying the other third of your income in child support. Use the third you have left to buy soup, rice and beans, put gas into your 20 year old car and pay rent on the dismal little condo you ended up with after you lost your 4 bedroom house in the divorce settlement.

Question your sanity often, and always, always second guess yourself because you've failed as a husband and a father. Keep plenty of booze in the cupboard for when you don't get a Father's Day card, or Birthday card, or telephone call or E Mail from your children.

Isolate yourself from the outside world as much as possible; they just want to hurt you anyway.

Use Trainz as an escape from your real life, make stuff and upload it, enjoy the only fellowship with other human beings you now have.

Sleep alot. Get a prescription if you can for anxiety, when the random occurrence of having to actually talk to someone rears it's ugly head.

If you have a friend who is as miserable as you, it helps to go out for a meal sometimes, but then it's back to the forum and Trainz when you come home.

Now, keep in mind that this could take ten years or more to accomplish, but in the end you'll know where you stand, and maybe, just maybe; you'll have a bunch of posts on the forum, and some far flung friends that will keep you buoyant just when you're sure you are sinking.

I imagine that would work!:hehe:

Inspiration?

You could open a thread in the Trainz Forum and ask for ide....:o Sorry, you’ve already done that!

I’m assuming that your (lost) interest lies in Route building rather than Driving already created routes.

There are times when a break away from a particular Trainz project can help revitalise. I’ve found that the following ideas have worked.

  • Build separate routes based on different locations. If boredom sets in with one, go and do some work on the other.
  • Try building a prototypical route, or just a small part of one. If you’re old enough to remember old railway lines which have long been torn up, try re-creating a small bit of an area where you perhaps did some train spotting. The research involved in seeking out the local history and finding old maps showing historical tracks can be very rewarding.
  • If Gmax or Blender isn’t for you, why not try doing some simple re-skins. Or, easier still, start with making some ground textures or skies based on some of your own images.
If none of the advice in this thread is helpful, you could perhaps try again after a further break.

And if, after all that, nothing works, can I have your rusty rails and weeds please?

If you haven't downloaded Lielestobrat's N2 locos, do so. Wonderful. Hook them up to some of Andi06's equally excellent Gresley Quad-Arts.

How about filling in the detail on the Hertford Loop on the ECML route? I think you said you worked that line in your railroading days? This would be a definite project with an end goal. I'm sure the ECML team would appreciate your help.

I would definitely move to a version of Trainz with layers. The biggest improvement and removal of frustration in a long time.

Sometimes however, it's just time to move on. I used to be fanatical about pipe organs, and despite having a very large and fancy digital organ in the house, and ten years of lessons, one day I lost interest in it and it's now been sitting under wraps for about three years. I'm just sitting it out, hoping that the interest will come back one day. Definitely don't get rid of any of your past Trainz projects!

Cheers,
Mick Berg.
