Hey! You broke my Avery - Drexel!

normhart

Trainz Entry Level
In fact you broke a whole bunch of my Tume content! I had A-D working fine in 49922 and now a bunch of stuff is broken. I took a look and apparently some 3.7 asset updates have been imported into my 3.6 build. That can't be right, can it? Other assets say they are version 3.6 but contain seasonal entries that are not valid in 3.6, the tracks for instance should be build 3.7. I have not checked other content creators assets to see if my build 3.6 is updating to 3.7 assets for them too but I am stopping updating in 49922 until this is fixed. (now I have to go delete a ton of Tume assets so they revert to a working version. Grrrrrrr!

Which brings up the question: When DLS trainz-build(s) are updated to T:ANE standards, all the updated assets on the DLS will be unplayable in 10, 12

OMG I had not thought of that, I assumed that the Content Manager in each game was filtering to not download updates that were above it's current build level and I assumed that N3V's DRM/error checking was insuring that content loaded as 3.6 in fact was not build 3.7+. That pretty much destroys the updating process entirely doesn't it?

Edit: In fact it pretty much destroys the Download Station. I won't be able to download anything off it without carefully checking that it hasn't been broken updated beyond usability. Not good, not good at all.

If that was a question then there should have been a question mark in there somewhere. Of course if you download stuff made for a version you don't have then it won't work. Either don't do it or if you can't stop yourself then delete the stuff that has a trainz-build that is too high for your installation. Problem solved.

If you have 61388 (SP1 HF4) installed, then you would have no problem with the content.

Now having said that, I've run into a couple of things that are 4.x that were listed, but could not be downloaded, which is a good thing. The filtering though should be better to totally exclude and not display assets above a specific build number.

Great! And how will you know that something in the 1000s of updates is of a higher build number?

CM will show you the build number before you download it. Just don't download stuff you can't use (saves bandwidth as well)

UPDATES! You know, that big block thing shows up in the menu after you hit start? The one that says that there are 100s if not 1000s of updates for your game?

I have not downloaded any Tume content in awhile, apparently the Update process in 49966 build 3.6 downloaded and installed 3.7 content and 3.7 content which had erroneous version 3.6 labeling in the config.txt.

I am afraid that the same will be true in my TS2010 too.

Why use that? Much easier to use CM and see what you are downloading first and also you won't download updates for things you don’t even have installed.

My TRS2006 CM shows: "Updating Database", which installs all the updated trainz-builds, breaking every asset it touches for TRS2004, TRS2006, TS09, TS10, TS12 ... It does not spare the older versions of assets ... it changes them forever to the highest trainz-build.

That turns out to not be the case. I do have 61388 installed, and I have imported Avery-Drexel into it. It too was working fine until I applied the latest set of updates. At this time both the EF1 and EF4 locomotives are broken "unknown asset" which appears to be a sound file associated with the bogeys.

Well that's just stupid!

It never occurred to me that the "updates" would actually not work in the game! No filtering at all on version? That really is stupid.

I guess it's my fault, I just assumed that the game wouldn't download things it couldn't use. Oh well maybe tane will be better, right?

NO ... When T:ANE 2 comes out in 2016, with an even higher trainz-build, it will definitely break almost all the DLS, and 04, 06, 09, 10, 12 assets will no longer function in those lower games, and backdating them will be most difficult, or probably won't work at all.

When Whitepass updates one of his TRS2004 assets to be T:ANE trainz-build, it breaks his asset for use in all other lower trainz versions.

That's the real beauty of Trainz ... N3V designs the gaming platform ... and all the creators, do all the hard work, creating all the assets, for N3V, and all the creators update, all their own assets, breaking them for everyone else. N3V just sits back and sells the gaming platform.

That is so silly, UPDATES should be exactly that and they should not be downloadable if the Build Version is higher than the Build Version of the game. I mean it is so self-evident and so easy to fix that it really is difficult to believe that it wasn't done deliberately to break the older games. Bizarre.

The updated assets only break your install if you download them. I really don't care what you do, it's your time and bandwidth you are wasting.

My T:ANE updates won't break my older assets because I'm not giving them the same kuid.

Now you're getting the grand scheme of things straight ... get all the creators to break their assets trainz-builds in other lower versions ... then sell more updated games ... pretty soon all our station stops will be miles long, of non functioning games that we bought

If you use the latest version of the software then no, you won't have this problem. Personally I don't think this was a deliberate move by N3V, they just don't always make logical decisions .

All of my old game versions are still working just fine thank you, but then I know what I am doing.

The first version of trainz I bought was TS12. I purchased all the older versions so that I could import older content into TS12. I had no idea that the UPDATE function was so dysfunctional. Although I have been able to, sort of, restore my Avery-Drexel I am very disheartened to discover such a obvious flaw in the game. Paul, you only know what you are doing because you have been at it for a very long time. For us newbies finding that the game breaks itself is unbelievable. I also change the kuid number when I change the build version number, I mean, it is only sensible. If, on the other hand, I modify something to be compatible with newer versions of the game while still compatible with earlier versions I do not change the kuid. I guess I'll just have to be much less trusting and much more careful. I am giving up for today, it's just too frustrating having to remember all the fixes I did a year ago and redo them.

Why did they come out with a rushed out TS09, and sold it to people ... and only several months later come out and resell a new TS10 game, to TS09 users ?
