hi all

i have read quite a bit now about where people take a satellite picture of the are they wish to model and then lay it on a map and build over it in surveyor

how can i do this?

sorry to ask, but i am new to all this

thanks
ron

Hi Ron,

I have had a play with this and it works wellk, you just need to test it first.

Click on this link here to go to a Tutorial on BaseMaps. It also has a link to download the required basemaps. In the tutorial they use a street directory but the principal is the same of course. Just get your images using Google Earth and your on your way to have a lot of fun.

Hope this helps.

Hi Ron, not sure exactly what you mean.

I just looked at this in TC and there should not be a problem, however there is a minor error in the Config file and you will need to fix that. The other thing is that this way does take a little getting used to no matter what version of Trainz you have. Before you go any further I would go to TC and into Surveyor and Create a new layout, any name will do, it is only a test sample. You will find the BaseMaps in the Scenery tab where buildings are under "custom". Add this to your baseboard and have a play with it, you will find it has writing on it like "BaseMap A" (whatever). Move it to the edge of the baseboard and using the height function (H) lower or raise it. Lowering it you will see that part of the image disappears and you will have to use your imagination at this point and think of how it would look with an image similar to the tutorial.

I think your asking where do you get the Street map shown in the Tutorial, well for that I really do not have an answer :( .

However, you first wanted to know how to use a satellite picture for this and with that I can help. You can download Google Earth for free and it is quite easy to use, plus is quite good fun. You can even find your own home and places all over the world. Download it from here. Play with it a little to get used to it first.

What you will have to do it take a screenshot of the area you want at a suitable height, then save the screenshot as a JPEG image using a suitable image program. There are some free ones if you have not got one. Then with your images (9 of them as in the Tutorial and named accordingly "1km square a" etc) you will need to place them into the folders for each BaseMap. To do this open TC and go to CMP then locate each BaseMap in order and open it to "Edit in Explorer", this will open the folder. You will now have to find the stored image "1km square a" and copy it to the open folder, then repeat this for each BaseMap. This should not be a real problem if you know how to use the folders in Explorer.

Once you have finished this you can then start to use them in TC and start creating your route, and this is where the fun starts. From memory the Tutorial tells you that part of the image will over lap and you will need to compensate for this and "double up" in a way for each of the 9 BaseMaps. This will be a slow process if your looking at a large layout, but it will work.

Have a go and see how it works. I know I had problems at first and another Trainzer sent me a number of emails with instructions. I think I still have them so if your having problems email me from here (that will give me your email address) and I will find them and forward them on.

Out of curiosity are you looking at any particular area? There are some DEM files available but not for Australia that I know of.

Hope this helps.

Let me know how you go.

Oh BTW, the learning curve for Trainz is long and sometimes difficult, we have all been through it so just ask away with your questions. You may actually find an answer using the search function, but like all search functions you some times need to know the right words and if you do you may end up with heaps of threads and pages of post that really do not answer your question. Remember, the only "dumb question, is the one not asked"

www.streetmap.co.uk Select the area and zoom in/out to the 1000m size map. RMC the centre square and save it. you will need to convert to JPG file then save it. now you just replace the image from basemap with this one keeping the basemap image name. The map image is the correct size and you only need to place the basemaps next to each other, no overlapping.

Depending on your technique of map building, there might be a few issues with Base Maps. As long as you stick to the accompanying tutorial, work with 1 km squares from O/S maps (or any other Cartesian projection with 1 km grid lines) and do not employ a DEM for the same route you should be fine.

With Google Earth make sure to correctly scale the images. There are couple of ways to do this.

If you are planning to use DEMs as well, think twice. DEM and Base Maps must match. For this to work, both DEM and Base Maps should be based on the same geo coordinate system. Otherwise you will have rivers running uphill.

hi all
i must be stupid
i cannot find where to set the size in google

could somebody please explain in detail how to save it and where i can then find it

Ron, I had a look for my emails about this but I must have deleted them. I need to email the person who helped me and he may still have them. If not I will set some up and send them to you.

i am new to all this

if you could find some body that has made some of these with the different colourings still on them, then i think i may attamept to place the textures on them in surveyor.

but i would not buy this and try it first up

i need to figure out if its worthwhile my doing so first.

thanks for the link.
