First I suggest looking through the manual that comes with the version you have to learn some of the basic techniques. Again, without knowing which version you have, I can't help you specifically. This will give you ideas on how to use the various tools. I also suggest downloading other completed routes and taking a look at them in Surveyor. This will give you an idea on how to use the tools effectively and while you are at it, you can experiment or even expand on what you have downloaded. I did this oh, so many years ago when I first got TRS2004. After I experimented a bit, I then started working on an early version of a route I am still working on today.
The overall route building process is not complicated, however, it is time consuming and can be frustrating and tiring. Having said that, start small, perhaps a baseboard or two then expand from there. You can always start again, or even incorporate what you have created already and merge, and grow from there.
You need a purpose for your route. Do a search in the forums on this. I created some lengthy threads on layout creation. Some of these are answers to others while some are starting threads. There is also a tips and tricks sticky for using Surveyor with some outright brilliant tips on using the various tools to their best abilities.
