Hell on Wheels, Hell on Film

Well, we have the newest railroading film, Hell on Wheels, and, in my opinion, it is a dud.

I suffered through most of the pilot, and gave up at the point where I was wishing that an asteroid would land somewhere around Omaha or Independence and exterminate the creatures that masquerade as characters in this film. I found no one worthy of a moment's consideration as a protagonist. Admittedly there is mention of Credit Mobiliere, which is nice and often overlooked, but you would have known of this if you stayed awake in Junior High. Other than that, you have a polyfoam steam engine, which was quite well done, but hardly qualifies as a hero in the film. That's it.

Look, I'm not a curmudgeon, but I insist that there be some sort of story and uplifiting plot, even if it is occasionally ugly, to a film that claims part of my life to look at it. You could do better recording the programs on the RFD station - they seem to be railfans there, or detailing the scenery on your favorite route, or read Mark Twain.

Sorry, but I hate it.

I totally agree with your synopsis. I left about 1/3 through this muddled waste of good Kodak film.

I gave it five minutes. I'm fine with "suspending disbelief" but when a new series opens with a soldier randomly picking out a church to walk into with the intent of giving confession and being subsequently killed by a hired gun masquerading as a priest, it's too much to allow. DONE!

Is the gunslinger clairvoyant? How long did he wait for the soldier? Was he prepared to wait there all day? How did he know the soldier would appear in the church?

The odds are just too great...:hehe:

Euphod,

I have great respect for your opinions. Your sense of the preposterous overwhelms this film.

Bernie, thank you for the praise but it will not serve you well here to associate yourself with me. I agree with your review, and I see that you understand my point.
It's too bad, so much squandered potential in such a rich vein of American history at that!
Oh well, "The Walking Dead" is getting a bit laborious for my taste too, but I'll probably give it the rest of the season!:D
