Hey All,

Do cement bricks get transported on flatbed cars or is it only in liquid form?

Thanks for any insights!

Concrete bricks or blocks are factory made and palletised, so they may be transported by flatcar or enclosed wagon (or truck or trailer). Fresh mixed concrete (not really a liquid, better described as semi-liquid, or a dense slurry) has to be continually agitated when being transported, otherwise it settles squeezing out the water and becoming a solid and immoveable mass. Fresh mixed concrete concrete is hardly ever transported by rail except at special large scale construction sites over relatively short distances.

Cement powder (part of the mix of concrete) is often transported by rail in specialised wagons although it too settles into a dense mass during transport. At the point of discharge the powder is flooded and agitated with compressed air to enable it to be unloaded.

Bagged cement would naturally be transported in containers or boxcars, since rain would convert it to cement blocks if it were on flatcars. Gotta keep it dry.

Transporting liquid concrete by rail.
The one we used had chain driven pumps from the axles & hydraulic motors to turn the drum during transport .End dump same as a normal mixer. When dumping the mixer was reversed & powered by a pto on the loco

Ish, as well as some 30ft Cement Tank Containers on the DLS, I know TRAMP made a very good British Rail Cement Mixer on KUID 2:75810:150750:1, and even though it may be European in looks, there's no reason for it not to be used in a North American layout if needs be....

Thank you guys!!

I'll take all the info and come up with something ... I've made 2 cement factory which are at the DLS, and I was looking on expanding this concept, either by products, or something else ....

Thanks again

I have a photo taken in late August 2007 of a cement mixer on 3' 6" rail wheels sitting at the apex of the wye at Forsayth in north QLD. It was used by the track gang to mix cement for bridge abutments and other such rail-side items.

Please, show us the photo!:)

Ish,

I have a concrete block and tile plant on my railroad. in addition to concrete block on pallets (which, by the way, I cannot find as a shippable product on the DLS) they also ship drainage tiles on pallets, 6" - 12" dia, x 24" lg.

I used to work for a company that made concrete pipe equipment - machines that produced concrete pipe up to 12 ft in dia. If you are interested, I can send you some sketches of what they looked like. Would make for a great industry.
