GPU Overheating

High Speed Rail!!
I cant run trainz for more than 10 mins and then my computer resets. I really love to drive trains but I cant go long without a computer reset. In route editor I can run the game for hours but in driver no more then 10 mins. I have speed trees along my route and regular trees. Should I replace all speed trees with low-ply trees.

By reset do you mean a complete automated shutdown (overheat protection) or blue screen? Are you monitoring the chip temperatures while the sim is running? Does this occur with other graphics intensive programs?

Hi Jon,

If your computer resets this frequently, then lower poly trees won't make a difference.

This may not necessarily have anything to do with just your video card. Have you run any tools such as EVGA PrecisionX, if you have one of their cards? That would tell you if your video card is toasting or not. The crashing could be caused by your CPU, motherboard, faulty memory, etc. For starters I would check for blocked air vents, clogged or stalled fans, and properly seated heat sinks. Your power supply may not be adequate enough and dropping the 12V line, drives a lot of components, could be causing the problem. I will note that the the 400-series video cards, based on the Fermi chipset do run hot. NVidia resolved that issue with the next generation, but older ones do get quite warm. If you're tests definitely show a hot video card, even with clear vents and fans, etc., see if you can return it to the manufacturer for warranty.

There is one more thing to check. What sound card do you have? I had an issue with the SoundBlaster Z-series recently. My machine would reboot while in driver after anywhere between 10 to 90 minutes. I checked everything from RAM to power supply, fans, etc. Eventually I narrowed the issue down to the sound card. After I disabled it, Trainz ran fine and I've since swapped back to the built-in sounds and have had no problem since.

Please check out these things mentioned, and let us know

John

Has nothing to do with speedtrees or the game itself. Your problem is probably related to cooling. I would give all you fans and heatsinks, especially the GPU, CPU and Power fans and heatsinks a real good clean and the inside of the box as well. It used to be a problem I had occassionally when the weather got hot and I hadn't cleaned the system fan, it would run for maybe 15 mins and just die. Took me a little while to figure out the problem.

As for your system, your right at the bottom of a good system, very little memory, really need a min of 4GB and your graphics card is very old. You should be able to pick up a GTX550 or 560 Ti, very cheap now, although still a somewhat old card, the still give a respectable performance level. After that I would get another CPU but that would most likely mean a new motherboard. Cost could be a factor in this decision.

I have a slim form factor pc, and I am about to buy 6gb of ram. I really don't know what to get for my pc size, I want to spend about $125.
I haved played other games such as Batman Arkham City and the game ran very well on medium graphics. And it never crashed. This game is very gpu intensive, even after I checked the hardware dl. Still crashed, and what I mean by crash is the computer would boot up again. And as we speak it is at a temperature of 55c, not playing games. The gpu only crashes when I'm playing this game.

gawpo50 is on the money here. If your computer suddenly crashes and resets, and does that frequently under moderate load then it is most likely that your CPU is overheating. With multiple fans running computers suck in a lot of dust, much of which will settle between the heat sink fins above your CPU, preventing them from effectively dissipating the heat. Most heat sinks are attached by four spring loaded screws and removal is quite easy - but you need to avoid handling the actual CPU below (be careful not to damage the motherboard). Once you have removed the heat sink give it a good blow out with dry air. Before replacing the heat sink you will need to coat the contact surface with thermal grease, which you can buy at any computer store for around $5 - 10. You should also give the rest of your computer box a good clean out also. Of course, don't do any of that unless you have completely isolated the computer from the power. If you are not confident at doing all that, just take your computer to a local computer service agent.

10-4 on this. I was inside my computer case for another reason and noticed that my CPU cooler had a lot of dust packed into the fins. Blasted it clean. Then pulled the graphics card so i could get a good look at it - packed with dust! Blew it out and GPU temps dropped 20C. I never had the GPU crash or anything but had noticed temps higher than normal.

Hi,
I had the same problem a few years ago.
I changed the case from the original supplied to an Akasa one.
That had 2 x 10 cm fans plus a CPU cooling vent.
I than added a heatpipe cooler for the CPU.

The CPU temperature used to be 60C or higher, afterwards it didn't exceed 35C.
The new case would give you a significant improvement for little outlay.

Was using the nvidia GTX 460, card being 3 1/2 years old. Same result, computer resetting itself. Card was running way to hot, knew that, carefully took card apart and cleaned old hard thermal paste, and applied new thermal paste. Got another 6 months out of the card then it just wouldn't run for more then 10 minutes. Replaced with GTX 650 TI and now whistling down the rails with way better performance then I thought possible with this 32 bit xp machine.

Unfortunately, once a GPU or CPU has been cooked, its on borrowed time...
Its usually quite easy to exchange a CPU provided one can can a the same chip ( or equivalent - I swapped a single core CPU for a dual core, but the motherboard supported both, and the pin out was identical)

the GPU on the other hand usually is soldered onto the graphic card, so its just a replacement card. Usually one can get a new card with a better performance quite cheaply these days.
First task is to sort out the overheating, then monitor what happens.
Trainz is quite hard on the processors - hence the need or better than average cooling.

I'm running once of those big Cool Master CPU coolers. My air-cooled i7 doesn't go any higher than 58C when using Trainz. With the large case, my GTX680 stays pretty cool as well at 50C max.

Applying a very small amount of Radio Shack - Arctic Silver thermal paste under a cleaned off chip, on you motherboard, and on the video card, may help. As Arctic Silver is electricly conductive, so don't overslop, or allow it to ooze all over the board

If you want RAM you can go to the Crucial website http://www.crucial.com/ and it will scan your PC and tell you what RAM you can use. I would suggest, once you find this, using the RAM description to find the cheapest price. And never use "generic" RAM (not a well known name) - read reviews of the stuff before you buy it.

Well my card's fan stopped working and I am currently broke for the a few weeks. I have to replace the fan, does anyone know of any great gpu heatsinks. My card has shown me very good performance in the past. And I can't replace it until next years taxes so a quick fix has to do. And also my pc form factor perventa me from adding cards larger then one slot. I would of bought a better card if I had the space. So guys, help please. My fan is gone and I am out of warranty. So please help.

which fan is out of order? the one on the GPU GT 430? If, after cleaning it wont spin then this is likely not worth replacing. Once a CPU or GPU fan dies, the underlying component is usually damaged.(CPU/GPU)
Search newegg or ebay or wherever you get your equipment for a reasonable priced small form factor replacement card. As a hardware tech I have seen many may times where its just not worth trying to fix. don't throw good money after bad.

The fan is trying to spin but it can't and I used the MSI afterburner overclock tool and I got it spin for a few seconds then it stopped. So I dont know, I really want to replace the card but at the same time, I am broke as hell. And money is not in my vocabulary, so if I replace the fan/heatsink. How long might it run?

impossible to say. Depends on the amount of damage it has sustained. Its very possible that getting the temp back under control it will continue to work fine, often does. I wouldn't trust it though. Have you taken the card out? Clean the fan and its spindle/bearings whatever its riding on very very good. Use acetone or something similar to ensure you get all the gunk out. Use a vacuum and suck it really well. Sterilize it! then put a tiny tiny dab of fine oil on its center. You might get the fan working again....
