Goodbye to My fellow Trainz Creators and Friends thanks for helpng me learn from 2002

It's not making much sense to me although I have observed that he's joined another Trainz forum that I'm also a member of - not sure if that's linked to it.

By the looks of it, something's made him unhappy here but I'm not entirely sure what at this stage.

I'm used to befuddlement - tis my usual condition, lol.

Let me see if I can clarify my position (or should I say worries). I'm too old to learn Blender and won't spend $3000 on a program that can only do one thing. I've always tried to make and upload my items to the lowest common denominator. By that I mean the oldest version allowed at the time so as many folks as possibly could download and use them. When the lowest version rises above 3.7 I will start uploading to whatever the new version is. Along those lines I was planning on buying a new computer (around $10,000 worth) specifically to work with T:ANE and its demanding requirements. In fact if my move from Florida to Tennessee hadn't cost about 3 times what I thought I might be typing on it right now. I'm not about to layout that much coin of the realm if the Sword of Damocles is hanging over my head in the form of N3V cutting me off at the knees by making anything made using Gmax absolutely incompatible with the games requirements. Bottom line = I'm looking for some serious assurance N3V will not do that.

That make any sense?

Ben

Re Blender and although I have been retired a good few years I make 20 km maritime animated routes in Blender based on srtm2 data. So I don't think age is applicable. I can't give more details as these forums have changed to much for me to post further. Just learn the keyboard key for Blender to start with. r rotate, s scale, g grab and so on. Happy Sailing to all moderators.

I'm with you and Deane on this one. I wonder what happened?

Could it be the winter blahs?

When that happens even the slightest annoyances make everything seem worse.

I'm not entirely sure I'm afraid as I joined this thread quite late on. He mentions some things in his responses further up the thread though but I haven't had chance to have a full look yet.

He is probably sick of the children and gimmiepigs, the crap known as tane and the way the forums are ran by N3V. He has joined up elsewhere in a much better stress and drama free enviorment. Thats all im saying on the matter. To truelly know why, I guess we will have to wait and see if he replies or be kept wondering, not that Id blame him for staying away ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I wouldn't call the alternative "drama free". It's crap either way.

Here it's complaints and gimmie pigs(More now than I've ever seen, blah), the alternative is complaints and individuals having a go at each other constantly. Smaller content creation groups such as TCWW for example are just nicer to be involved with.

TPR was once the home to the disaffected, now ......

I'd also like to note that today's 'children' and 'gimme pig' posters are probably those most likely to become tomorrow's content creators' as they have sufficient interest in the subject matter to actually post.

Barry, no offense but,........................................you make me sick!

Okay, there are some great Blender tutorials out there, but animation stuff? Okay, I think we all ought to conscript you to teach us everything you know. You wouldn't happen to know how to do that Vulcan mind meld thing would you? :D

Don't be so coy. I thought Blender was a 3d modeling app. Useful to make objects that can be used in a route. Does it also have DEM features to create Trainz maps? How much of MicroDem or TransDem is it capable of doing?

I happened across a document written by Ian Manion, Vulcan, May 2008, called Producing Topography Maps for Trainz using Google Earth. In the document he discusses using Gmax for creating a tile object from a map produced by Google Earth. You create a texture map that gets mapped to the plane.

The concept was intriguing, but it looked like a lot of work! I broke down and purchased TransDEM, and I'm glad I did; it takes some getting used to, but it will do all that I will ever need to accomplish, and more.

Some time ago I started to get fed up with gMax, so I tried 3ds, I didn't like that any better, so I tried the new Blender (2.5) and found it to be the most usable program of all of them. I don't know why people are so scared of it.

So long buddy. Hope you find something else to hobby with.

Yeah, there have been a lot of content creators leaving. And there aren't many new ones joining the ranks. I actually feel one reason is the decision not to support GMax any more, because a lot of older creators used and liked GMax. And Mind-Blender is just too hard to learn, while GMax is easy and user-friendly. Another reason, not many can afford 3DS-Max.

As for me, I have a copy of 3DS-Max, and learned to use it (after many months of frustration) but have given up on it and gone back to GMax. (I never could learn how to "bake" textures which apparently is what a lot of fans like, even though, in my opinion, it turns a realistic looking asset into one that looks too dark, "computery" and cartoonish.)

Well, anyway, good luck to you and thank you for your contributions.

Cheers

Dave Snow
Although I don't like to disagree with such Titans as Dave Snow, I found the exact opposite to be the case. Blender is the easiest of them all for me. I guess it's just individual taste.

Blender has a builtin game engine and you can create terrain using height maps, so I would think you need to convert a DEM into a height map first, bound to be a few programs capable of doing that.

I heard too that this terrain is quite high-poly as well so I don't think it would be good for us to use in-game.

Hello Mick, sir

Habits --- they hard to break, sir!

In the beginning I use Gmax, and then switch to 3dmax years later because it had features that Gmas did not --- It took a while to get use to 3dmax interface! Thanks to Ian "Vulcan" for his tutorial among others of yesteryear that I was able to cope with the program.

With that said, is simplistic is your way to model then Gmax is great, but if you're a more accomplish creator, and like to use advance features 3dmax ... As for Blender never use it!

Kind Regards
Ish

you hit the spike on head Trainz mate Damon

By using descriptions like "the crap known as tane " reveals more about the person saying it. I don't think we'll know if that is what the OP actually meant but if it is true, scurrying elsewhere might be for the best. Stress and drama free? As long as he doesn't rock the boat, hope he is happy there.

Interesting that there have been many people who have better experiences with T:ANE but of course they don't know any better.

It would be the case that you have used TANE and TANE SP1 extensively in order to arrive at that conclusion ?

Interesting then that you don't seem to own a copy according to your timeline ...

So because I dont own a copy Im not allowed to give my own opinion? Get a load of this guy. Who cares if I havent played TANE. Just the looks and performance Ive seen by others with high end systems who cant run it speaks words. The issue lately on the board is all you white knights claiming that unless we have extensive hours in TANE then we aint allowed to talk about it. You fanbois will defend N3V to their grave. Then again, this is the N3V forums where negative opinions are frowned upon and removed. (For the record, I do own a copy on steam but it wouldnt install properly)

Not to worry. But currently 28 maritime Blender routes available for download from my site at the time of writing.
Mainly basic but some content. Liverpool docks of 1800 and 1833.
Sailing ships, sailing flats, working locks, based on srtm data. Similar Blender content I have used in earler versions of Trainz but Trainz is too complex for me at my age. Been retired a good few years.
Also many basic details about making Blender Content related to my maritime routes.
Routes are approx 20 km. Conwy 25km.
Tides also animated in Blender in the river Alt Route.

Happy sailing in trainz if my Maritime Trainz routes are still there.or happy sailing in Blender.

Barry
