Goodbye to My fellow Trainz Creators and Friends thanks for helpng me learn from 2002

Blender is not that bad, You just have to have time to devote to it and stick with it. It takes time to learn any new program, and once you learn you have to stick with it or you louse is. There is enough info on the web to get you going if you want to learn, and there's people here that can help as you go. You just have to ask questions. Thank you for all you've done, and hope you change your mind. Good luck.

... tried blender....nah, and I'm really wanting to get into 3d modelling, now more than ever. I need models for other things minus trainz (HO parts). ...

Blender has an addon to export models to a 3D printer. So you could make actual HO parts as long as they are in plastic.

Agreed. For many years I used Adobe Fireworks (a cut down Photoshop) for all my graphics work including reskins. When I was unable to install it on my new computer I switched to GIMP - and hated it! It was nothing like what I was used to, nothing worked the same, I could not even find the things I needed in the menus, etc.

It took about 3-4 months of frustration before I noticed that things started working the same, I found the substitute or "look-a-like" operations, I could work the menu system. Now GIMP is second nature to me and I get free updates (Adobe never did that).

At this point in time if I were starting afresh I wouldn't consider anything beyond Blender unless I was prepared to pay for 3DSMAX. Blender has all the tools and functionality needed to produce just about anything. That and the fact the program actually receives updates compared to GMAX.

If anything there are two things I can think of that would kill GMAX. Autodesk ceasing the distribution of the program by removing official sources, or Windows revisions breaking compatibility with the software over time.

...I would like a new model-maker that is specifically geared towards TRAINZ...

Partly because of the open source nature of Blender and partly because it has extensive 'User Preferences' allowing the user interface to be changed, it should be possible to produce a version of Blender that only has the features that matter for Trainz asset creation, this would make it much easier to learn. One forum member (who shall remain nameless) did toy with this idea and was going to give it a go but I've not seen or heard any more - (so if you read this let us know if you got anywhere :)).

There is little or no commercial advantage to N3V to do anything along these lines so you can't reasonably expect them to.

Doesn't 3D Canvas (or Crafter as it is now known) have a Trainz exporter?

Re the TS12 situation, as an olive branch to the community N3V IMHO should look at extending the life-span, or at least the period during which content and routes can be uploaded to the DLS, for another 12 - 18 months in recognition of the trials and tribulations many are still having with TANE. (And that many who build the routes and assets have older hardware which they may not be able to afford to replace).

In any event, the DLS is not the be all and end all of it. There are places like TS.com or UKTS where you can upload stuff, just means people have to go on a scavenger hunt but that's something we're used to from MSTS and RW-TS anyway.

Yes 3Dcrafter Pro does, I have it here, along with the others excluding Sketchup, enough said about that!

It should be possible to rearrange the interface in Blender so just the Trainz needed bits are available, as TACs did with GMAX or you could do with MAX proper. No I haven't used Blender enough to know what I'm doing with it yet to start messing with it!
3d Crafter could probably do with an updated exporter, unlikely to happen unless more people actually use it, 3DC is used for Railworks / DTG's Train Sim stuff.

Getting back to the original topic of this thread, Damon, I'm not at all clear on why you're leaving. Is it a protest of some kind aimed at the forum/community, a protest against TANE, a technical inability to create to TANE standards or something else? It would be quite illuminating to have you clarify this. Are you willing to, or do you prefer it to remain obscure?

I think the problem with this idea is when a new version of Blender comes out the interface has to be revisited. Best keep to the normal interfaces I think.

You want me to respond to your questions so here I am returning to do that I have 3.4 Version TS12 I'm not going to purchase another program TRS 12 is a good program I can't see anything different in Tane that I see in TS12 only difference is a bigger graphic engine and so on I'm not impressed at all I can't see anything different, Tane is a make over of TS 12, bigger graphic engine, that should have been improved before Tane, they I are behind the times, Dove Tail Games, and Run8 are now the top train Sims, Run8 is Number 1. I have made 1000 Items free, they are not supporting us anymore, we the Creator's have made trainz what it is, they have made little content I am 60 now. I have been invited to join trainz.net so I can still make stuff free and myself, there is my answer and answers, which ask for respect it. Damon

With respect one has to actually use TANE to see the improvements, yes it has bugs which are getting less as N3V fixes them although I doubt they will all get done. Some have problems some don't, the same can be said about any other version of Trainz, just that people are making more noise this time due to the Kickstarter saga.
Meanwhile TS12 is still good until September this year at least and the minimum TS12 build is 3.5 which can still be uploaded not 3.4 which is TS2010.

No one spotted that 3.4 is a 2010 build not TS12?

From here: http://online.ts2009.com/mediaWiki/index.php/"Trainz-build"_number

I too can vouch that T:ANE is improved, although the loss of DLS support for earlier versions is, no doubt, costing N3V content creators in a bad way, and the community as a whole. Especially since it's not needed.

In any case, sad to see you leave, Seniorchief. Who knows, I may follow.

It is always an emotional moment when an old sailor departs the vessel, not to return. As an old sailor myself, with more than 30 years of salt water to wring from my socks, I can understand the sentiment. Your contributions to the Trainz Community are well noted and appreciated. We will miss you Chief.
"Right hand salute........................................................Tooooooo!"

On the other hand, I find that Trainz, like the sea, can get into a man. Perhaps we'll meet again.
Fair winds and Godspeed, sir, where ever you choose to sail.

Best regards,
Mike

You can never leave Trainz completely ... I hope that you will still be running Trainz and posting here on the forum ... I still use many of your assets on my PRR route !

Not active duty Navy myself but I've spent some years at sea in the Merchant Marine.

FWE, Secure the Watch, Liberty Call.

Gook luck and fairwinds Chief.

What is it about train simulators that causes people to become so maudlin when they decide to leave. And then feel the need to justify their decision and dump on the version used by others who don't share their feelings.

I don't have any other long term online games so perhaps this is not restricted to train sims but a symptom of being online instead.

Why can't they just leave and then if they every return, there are no hard feelings. Or if a goodbye is offered, just say goodbye.

I agree John that, in theory, the Trainz Version would require updating whenever the Blender interface was changed but in practice this would only need to be done when significant changes impacting on Trainz content creators happen and maybe not even then.

After all GMAX was a cut down 3DS Max and has not been updated for 10+ years but people still use it.

The trouble with the full version of Blender is that 95% of what's there is never going to be used by Trainz content creators and for a new starter that's overwhelming, in fact for an 'old hand' after a Summer break it's overwhelming as I know !
