Go the Wolves (UK)

Hey Guys

Some 40 odd years ago when I lived in the UK, I used to go train spotting at Wolverhampton usually at the Low level station there, and I know I maybe pushing the proverbial uphill here but I'm wondering if anyone has any track plans of both the Low level and the High level station, everything I can find online shows either the new redevelopment or just the mainline, nothing showing the sidings, I understand that in the late 60's the Low level became a parcels depot and the configuration was changed quite a bit but if possible I would like plans that date circa late 50' to mid 60's.

Also If anyone out there is old enough to remember did the stations just have Wolverhampton on their name boards or did it include High level and Low level as well?????

Any thoughts??????

Thanks

The old-maps site is excellent. When you get to the first page on the link provided by pfx, click on get maps then you can navigate around the large map of the UK and select the area you want. I found your stations very quickly.

If it helps, in the get maps page, type 392005 in the first coordinates box and 298871 in the second. This will centre the map selection between your two stations. You can then select the map you want from the extensive list in the right hand drop down menu. Here's an example part of a pre WW2 1:2,500 scale image. There are plenty of others including one which is 1:500 (showing tracks plans detailing both rails, turntables etc.) although that one might be a bit too early for the era you are looking for. It might contain some memorable details which survived until your train spotting days though.

Hopefully this is isn't in breach of copyright - more an advert for the excellent old-maps site.

I'm just old enough to remember the low level in use as a parcels depot . As a trainman then driver at Bescot I signed the southern end of the low level station and Wednesfield road sidings in the late 80s until it closed . We went down into the former low level with the loco to run around the wagons . There was also a Tamper repair depot which always had one or two machines stabled outside . The Midland railway Wednesfield road sidings where used as an overspill to Wolverhampton Steel Terminal and we had a job where we worked Bescot to wolves steel , then Wolves steel to Wednesfield road via the Stour valley , Soho Road , Back through Bescot then Portobello . At wolves you had to reverse the train up the remains of the Heath town branch then draw forward down the old GW to Midland connector into the low level , run round , draw the wagons back up the connector , then shunt them into Wednesfield road sidings !

Not maps but pics on Flickr that maybe of Interest : https://www.flickr.com/search/?q=wolverhampton+low+level
This set of Flickr shots where taken in the early 80s and show the low level route from Bushbury through to Snow Hill via Wednesbury , At that time the former mainline existed as a long double track siding from Wednesbury steel terminal to Wolverhampton Steel terminal : https://www.flickr.com/photos/railway_images/sets/72157634308433896/
