trying the gmax tutorial and so far getting the hang of things ... hopefully if i have enough patience i can whip up my own trains

is it possible to resize pre-existing boxes in gmax? i notice how if you create a box and finalize it the parameter fields are gone... but can u still resize?

Yes, if the stack has been collapsed and the original box has vanished, not allowing you to enter the dimensions, then select the box and at the top, two over from the select tool, there is a re size tool which will allow you to re size uniformly, non uniformly or squash by just holding your mouse over the box and moving it.
Another way to do it is to add a edit mesh to the stack and selecting vertex and then select the appropriate vertex's which will turn red when selected and moving them.
Note you may have to do the UVW mapping over if you have any thing like stripes or lettering already textured as they will get distorted, if you have a solid color there will be no problem.
