Hey LieLestoSbrat,

I wonder know that which would what kind of you using GMAX or 3DSMax?:)

Also,

Look very awesome 48 Class Loco!:Y:

Can I ask a question regarding texture baking? I have access to 3dsmax through college, and I've been trying my hand at texture baking. Obviously due to time constraints, I've not really had the time to mess around and generate renders there, so I need to ask in other places.

How should I go about this texture baking for rolling stock objects? I've been thinking things through, and it seems to me that I don't want to add a big fat spotlight to the scene and render with that, because the shadows will only be in the right place when the sun in TRS is in the same place as the spotlight in the scene....

What I have managed success with so far is something called ambient occlusion, which seems to render shadows regardless of direction.... It works well, but could any of you professionals reccomend something better?

Thanks for the (updated) post Unfortunately I don't really have the time for a 1000 sample render, but at elast I haven't gone in completely the wrong direction wioth AO.

You might find that you can get perfectly acceptable results with around 250 samples, and just doing a quick gaussian blur in photoshop afterwards, if you're stuck for time :)

Please excuse the image size... It's the only way to preserve some of the details in the render.

ZecRail Zs301 leads a 4 car pass through a rather long cutting, with a row of birch trees along the edge of the cutting.

Rather pleased with it so far, although the ground textures really needs some work...

Some 'facts' about the render scene. There are 1,812,006 polys, 5 lights, and 8 steam/smoke effects in the scene. In total, for that single image, the scene took just a little over 9 minutes to render.

Tommy -

The most important aspect of this technique is getting the mapping right. Make sure everything is flat with no overlapping edges. It'll help if you can get as many pieces of the map stitched together as possible as this will prevent artefacts creeping in at the edges. Once you've rendered out your AO, save it as a TGA and then open it in Photoshop. Drag the AO layer on top of your texture (preferably at the top) and activate the Multiply mode. Next, duplicate the layer at least twice and start playing with the opacity and blur settings until you find a good combination. Normally I have one layer as approx 40% opacity and another at about 20% which is also given a slight Gaussian blur.

It's worth mentioning here that you can render an good Ambient Occlusion pass without any fancy rendering tools in Max 5 upwards. I have three rendering systems on my machine, including Brazil r/s and finalRender and yet I almost always use the default renderer for this technique.

My gmax doesn't work. any other content making programs or is there any solution to this progblem. it keeps on exiting with no problem review once i set any of the shaping objects like cylinder. there goes the 4-4-4-4 t1!

Hi Zec,

Could I twist your arm into making a version of that without the catcher at the front? Perhaps painted in generic colours like blue, green or red?

It's a really good loco, but many countries won't need the cowcatcher and it looks like it could be found almost anywhere in the world, including the UK and Europe (my primary interests).

I got RenderSuite working and I'm almost done with this little 15" gauge loco:

Erm, possibly. If you look back a few posts there are renders of the same loco, with the class of Ke, in a variety of colour schemes including plain black. I can make the vow catchers a 'submesh' with the options of 2, one at the front, and none.
I'll see how it goes. Release won't be till Andi updates his superscript :)
