Googles Sketchup 7

I just downloaded Googles sketchup7 and I would like to know how to transfer a sketch over into GMAX
Matt.

A lot of people here including myself will tell you that there's no point in modeling in sketchup and converting to Gmax unless you are very skilled at it.

I have loco drawings so what would be the best way to use them on GMAX any help or advice would be great
thanks Matt

screw sketchup, learn Gmax. Its far more worth your time to learn Gmax. Its very very hard to move things made in Sketchup to gmax then to Trainz successfully.

And even when you can do it as I have, 90% of the work getting it into trainz is in Gmax

so skip the middle man and buy direct

Sketchup can be used to create simple models, probably not locos. Gmax or Blender are the best programs to create better looking models, but can be hard to learn.
And converting files from Sketchup to Gmax can involve other programs to convert to OTHER files to import into gmax.
so yeah very frustrating. :P

cheers

Iceman2117,

That is a really nice Old Dutch Ford transportwagon from A.B.Wolst.

I hope dat i can see that car in my '50 layout of Holland.

Greetings from the Netherlands,

Have you tried using Rendersuite? Apply a plain gray material (no actual texture) to the model, place a camera and a light, and then render :) Well, a little more complex than that, but a little bit of fiddling should get you what you want :)

I downloaded Rendersuite but have not experimented around with it. I'll look around and see if there are any tutorals on how to set it up and use it. There seem to be quite a few parameters that can be manipulated and I would like to know what does what within reason.

Thanks!

Does anyone knows how to create the electric spark? Im talking about that blue light that you see on a third rail of a train track when it touches it.

Since Network Rail parked four of these at the end of my garden over the bank holiday weekend, I thought I'd join the crowd and have a go at modelling one:

Hi All,
I'm about as noobie as one can be to Trainz.
As I think about my interest in the game/program, it is apparent that I'd like to create. This thread illustrates some amazing creations.
My question is which is the best creation program.
I own 3dsMax and have downloaded Blender. I have some experience with Rhino and I'm fairly proficient with Inventor.
From what I've read here, Gmax, 3dsMax and Blender seem to be the preferred programs. However these all have a more than a simple learning process, so I think it best that I choose one to learn. ( I'm 71 and not too bright).
So the question I pose to those with experience in several programs is; where should I spend my time?
Thanks,
Ozzie

If you have 3DSMax, then I would suggest focusing on that. A plus with this is that GMax and 3DSMax are essentially the same, so you can reasonably easily go from GMax to 3DSMax or 3DSMax to GMax (as in you can work in both). Converting meshes over is difficult (well, GMax - 3DSMax is, other way is simple).

Depending on which version of 3DSMax, you may require TS2009. 3DSMax 4/5 have TRS04+ exporters, 5-2009 have TS2009 exporters.
