G'day All,

.It's been far too long since I have posted anything here but I finally have something I think deserving of inclusion and unless you think I have gone "MIA" or something, I offer for your delectation, the initial renders of the "VR Type 'G' Generic Signalbox - 1c" exterior...

...which, although similar to an earlier project of mine displayed in these pages (which has, incidentally, long since been finished and is available for download from the 'official' Auran source), is a brand new and different asset completely ...

...as part of this project, I put out a call (in my 'other' forum - Victrainz) for suggestions as to how I might 'model' the 'interior' but since there were no 'takers' to my offer, I decided to go with one of my own ideas...

...this amounted to me thinking, perhaps, over-zealously, into doing the interior as if the signalbox had been upgraded on the inside from the original McKenzie & Holland Lever Frame (or the original Miniature Frame and Illuminated Diagram) that it would have had when it was built to a more modern VR adaptation of the Union Switch & Signal Company's Electric Switch Panel design. So, I came up with this (after I'd spent a few hours researching a suitable location to 'fit' the signalbox)...

VR_Type_'G'_Generic_Signalbox23.jpg

...as a consequence of which, for a week or so, I was kept a very busy boy...

...speaking of busy, it isn't obvious from the above images but we have taken a 'snapshot' of a time in the life of this box when things are rather busy, indeed! (I would not want to be the Signaller on duty at this time)...

...if we take a look, firstly, at the 'Laverton' end of the Indicator Panel...

VR_Type_'G'_Generic_Signalbox24.jpg

...we see that there is a train stationary at the platform on the West Line (indicated by the two adjacent red LEDs along the black line representing the track (below the area marked as the Platform). this is an Up Service about to depart from this location towards our 'Signalbox' running via Westona. You can't tell that easily from the Indicator Panel, so this image of the 'Laverton Area' Switch Panel...

VR_Type_'G'_Generic_Signalbox27.jpg

...should clear this up. As can be determined from both of these images, the route has been set for this train to only proceed as far as Westona, where it is scheduled to cross with a down train (more of which later). There is a 'small' human touch depicted in these images (which I would not expect many of you to notice) but because of distractions elsewhere, the Signaller has yet to return the signal switch behind the train (which originated elsewhere), although the Signal Indicators show that Signal at Stop, that being Post LAV20. Whilst we're here, if we look to the top of the Indicator Panel, we can also observe the presence of a train approaching North Williamstown, which has been given 'permission' to proceed as far as Signal 102 at Newport (not visible in the Switch Panel) because of the aforementioned Down train. It can clearly be seen that this Up train has initiated the Ferguson Road Level crossing 'protection', indicated by the flashing red LEDs on the Indicator Panel. In addition, there is an Up Goods train awaiting a path in the Goods Loop and the more observant amongst you might also see that we have an Up 'local' awaiting departure from the Workshops Platform. Toward this end, if we look at the right hand side of the 'Newport Area' of the Switch Panel...

VR_Type_'G'_Generic_Signalbox28.jpg

...we can see that the signaller has moved the points (No. 75 points) to allow for this imminent departure but the points have not yet locked in the reverse position and are still "running", although, quite rightly, no Signals have been 'activated' for this move. Moving to the central portion of the Main Indicator Panel...

VR_Type_'G'_Generic_Signalbox25.jpg

...we can see that the aforementioned Down Train headed for points south west of Laverton is fast approaching the Platform at Newport and that our intrepid Signaller has given him a "through run" all the way to Westona (let's hope he doesn't cause any untoward delays)...

...finally, if we turn to the left hand end of both the Indicator Panel and the Switch Panel...

VR_Type_'G'_Generic_Signalbox26.jpg

VR_Type_'G'_Generic_Signalbox29.jpg

...we can see the cause of the earlier 'distraction' that prevented our Signaller from returning Post LAV20 at Laverton to Normal immediately upon the arrival of the Up train, that being the presence of a train shunting out of the 'Anzac Sidings' (utilising the East Line as a head-shunt) for which the Signaller considered the replacement of Signal Post 24 back to Normal a greater priority...

...for those who might be interested, I have taken the Signal Diagram for Newport 'A' Box as it existed in 1984 (at which time it still overlooked some 2 Position Semaphore Signals) and on the premise of a complete 'upgrade', replaced all the Semaphores with 3 Position Light Signals and this brand new Panel (which, if the truth be known, isn't all that dissimilar from the one that actually exists at the location, today)...

...to be continued...
