Ghost Trains from portal

Dap

I am trying to create a session for the big contest and am finding one problem after another. My latest is on route CM Holly Subdivision. I am using QuickPortalManagerV3 to emit a train from portal TSBY which is a PortalBasicShort. The train emits on time, but is a ghost. the driver does not show up on the list of trains and drivers and when I click on the train, I get nothing. It is as though the train is not there. However, it does obey signals and manages to make turnouts align so it can go straight ahead as though it has a destination. However, it does not follow the driver commands it was given in Portal Manager.

Am I missing something?

G'day there,
I had a similar problem recently and found that the consist was too long for the piece of track before the first signal. Shorter trains didn't have the same problem. By lengthening the track directly after the portal I was able to get control back. Might be worth a try?

Cheers
Russell.

The only time I've had something like that was when I'd saved part way the emiting/spawning process. The only way I found to gain control was to send a spare driver+loco to couple to it.

I get where your coming from Dap. I too Iam working on a session for the contest on the same Map. But it seems that my Beta testers are getting the same errors as you describe. Switches missing, drivers not getting activated by triggers, and Trains not traveling to portals. I just dont get it as I am not getting any of these problems. And also to those that suggest editing the map. We cant as the rules state it must be from the bulit-in routes so no extending the length of track, no moving the portal or any of the regular suggestions if it was my map and I could edit it.

Sorry I kinda ranted and didnt answer your question that much,

Hert,

Rant away. I am totally frustrated with trying to make sessions for this route.

Rusty,

The first signal is 1300 ft from the portal, the train is 630 ft long. I even tried emiting a single engine - same problem. The train is very visible on the screen, yet when the mouse is clicked on it, nothing happens. No change in the camera, no highlighting the driver nothing, nada, zip, zero zilch.

I replaced the portal with maggs Re-Rail portal and everything worked fine. There is definately a problem somewhere in the system. Some users have the problem, some users do not. The question - what is causing this?

.....The question - what is causing this?....

I have read on these forums (somewhere) that there are a few problems with the short portals, not sure if the ghost train effect was one of them. A forum/Google search might get you some information.

Another thing that can cause them is if the portal hangs over the edge of the map (I found this one out the hard way after having several doing so).

If this is the case, use the extend land tool so that the portal is completely on the land and not over the edge of the map.

Is the portal showing a script error, the red button.
If so in the config file where you read, script-------"portal tunnel", you need to add .gs after tunnel.
This cured my problem of 4 random consists emitting after a derailment. Now I get the correct one only.

itareus,

Thanks for the suggestion. I was hoping someone had a short answer that would fix the problem. I'll spend some time looking.

Shane,

The portal is not hanging over the edge. This is a built-in route to which I can not make changes.

fran1,

I am not getting a red button, but your suggestion makes me think it is time to download the Portal Basic Short again and see if that solves the problem.

Thanks all for the suggestions.

David

Ya its been a while couple years but the short portals had big problems with releasing trainz from them., theyre was a post on em somewhere I know for sure in 2006 caused fatal errors ugh..................

Dang, sounds like this route is cursed.

Check the config's, I bet they haven't got the .gs I was on about. Neither of the re rail portals have and they are built in to 2010.

Fran,

Not quite sure what you are refering to. If it is the script file name for the tag "script", the .gs extension is not required. It is implied and most assets with scripts that I have seen do not include the .gs exension.

I have used the re-rail portals extensively and have never had a problem with them. I have them hanging out into space at the edge of a route with no problems. I have buried them and they still work.

My research of the Forums finds that Portal Basic Short has confirmed problems. What I'd like to know is how Trainz can include a route with nothing but defective portals as built-in and then recommend using that defective route for their session building contest? Do they not test these routes before they are included as built-ins?
