Generic elevation maps

Fishlipsatwork has several on the DLS, that have no tiger date colored lines.

The surveyor has a "Draw Bounding Box" where you can set it at @ 25% and paste an auto create a mountainous / valley terrain.

You can also create your own greyscale maps using a paint program, or even converting a photograph. I used an old fractal generating program to make some that work very nicely.

I would very much like to know how you create greyscale maps. Using the 'get map' option from the topology tools just gives me one slot, but I would need a lot more than that. There used to be a thread about this very topic for the Windows version of Content Manager, but the interface doesn't exist for the Mac versions.

I have no idea where that thread went - it's so difficult to search for topics...

In your content manager, find a displacement map asset and clone it. Put in your own greyscale image of the same name. Close the finder folder, submit (commit) the asset and you should be all set.

This is the essence of it. As I said before, ages ago now it seems, you can use a fractal image to produce a height map, convert it to greyscale and perhaps blur it a bit in a photo/image editor. I've used old Bryce to do this for some height maps, then used Photoshop to Gaussian blur it to get rid of the steps.

I hope this is helpful for you..
