in my opinein when the grand canyon dropped their steam program. the 4960 should be send to strasburg converted back coal to when it ran on the burlington route and put strasburg on the tender.

WELL THEY DIDN'T. There's no point in...

You know what? There's no point in arguing with you anymore. You just don't know how railroading works, and you refuse to learn. I've got better things to do with my life.

Well, 4960 has been upgraded to run on waste vegetable oil. The idea with this is that the vegetables used in the oil consumed more carbon emissions than the 4960 produces when operating. It's a win-win situation for the GCRY, as they gain a cleaner, cheaper method of firing 4960, and they gain (more) public support as they have a cleaner engine.

Though the everyday summer steam program probably won't be again, 4960 is scheduled to run about five times this year. The railfan community is hoping that this "limited" operation will eventually become a "semi-shortened" scheduling, like GCRY scheduling steam on summer weekends.

Ironically now, the FPA4s are the most likely to dissapear soon due to very outdated technology. At least the F40s bring back some nostalgia of their own

why burn vegi oil? it can be bought by the national park service and restroed to steam by steamtown shop crews. and run on ex LACKAWANNA LINES out of scranton.

you know how strasburg tears down there engines for their FRA inspection. well if the steamtown shop forces rebuild the 4960 from the ground up from it would pass it FRA inspection.

Except it's running. The 4960 is good for another two years. When the initial rebuild was done in 1996, it amounted to $1.6 million, and the railroad will definetly be putting this investment to use in 2011 when the 15 year rebuild comes up.

My bet is that when 4960 goes down, #29 will take its place. The railroad will likely put their effort into 4960 until 2016 when the 29 goes down for the rebuild.

Of course, that said: 4960 is RUNNING. No need for it to go to Strasburg. At all. Stop derailing your own thread

beside STRASBURG 90 can pull more cars the grand canyon 4960.

Dude, you can tell this is wrong just looking at the size of the engines. But if you want to get technical, Trains Magazine states that #90 has 48,000 tractive effort. steamlocomotive.info states that 4960 has 58,000 tractive effort. (See here: http://steamlocomotive.info/vlocomotive.cfm?Display=61)

I advise using steamlocomotive.info and steamlocomotive.com to learn many stats on almost every steam engine imaginable

STRASBURG 90 CAN pull 10 cars on the STRASBURG. and the 4960 can pull 8 cars on the grand canyon, DANNY PHANTOM FAN 1.

STRASBURG cars are made of WOOD. "drand canyon" cars are STEEL. STEEL is heavier than WOOD, SOMEONE WHO KNOWS WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT 1.

4960 typically pulls eight steel coaches, each of which weighs about 150 tons. #90 occasionally pulls ten wooden coaches, each of which weighs about 70 tons.

Also, 4960 pulls these train up a three mile stretch of 3% track, and also has to run at about 40mph. #90 typically pulls its trains up a 2% at 30mph.

That's not to say both engines aren't powerful. It's just to say, there's no purpose in comparing these two entirely different engines in totally different circumstances

You think everything needs to go to Strasburg. I can tell you with firsthand experience. Its NOT good when a museum/railroad gets too much equipment. When we got all the ex loop equipment at the Colorado Railroad Museum, it overwelmed us. about 53 new cars, all our tracks are filled to capacity, we cannot keep all 3 diesels and 3 steam locomtoives in perfect operating condition at once (we do try)

One of the Ex Loop diesels has a bad bearing, Shay 14 has a bad axle (both tens of thousands of dollars to fix) and IRCA 40 needs a firebox brick job

Too much equipment is not good
