Garbage Module

ApproachMedium

Youtube dude
Since JR's garbage train have been released, I have been dying to build a small module of a facility for them. Problem is, I can't seem to find much information on any prototype other then the train cars themselves. A Google map location would be bomber if anyone happens to know where a facility may be.

I was also wondering how these cars operated. Are the green containers emptied then placed back onto the flats to return to their origin? Or do the flats return to the their origin without the containers?

Forgot to add that I am a CSX fan and live in the northeast, so I'm looking for prototype info for that region.

well there could be

I could be mistaken but I believe that the cars are privately owned, as the containers they haul. I dont think there is a garbage route so to speak as more of a siding or yard where cars are spotted at an industry and the containers are loaded and unloaded just as an inter-model yard. The crane or forklift replaces the load on the flat cars. But, this is trainz and you, can build a garbage route specifically to well, haul garbage.

Best Regards
Mike S.

PS Would be neat to see a garbage container lift just like built in inter model lifts so the cars can be spotted at hub and then the cars could be loaded and unloaded by the lift, basically industry enabled

Transfer station

there is a transfer station that i dump at on fridays at bremerton, wa.

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=befai...25,-95.677068&sspn=31.784549,64.6875&t=h&z=17

Its all indoors though so there is not much to see. And they use 40 and 48 foot containers up here also. Like regular shipping containers with the roofs cut off.

I will try to get some pictures next friday when i am there. If you have any questions feel free to ask. I will try to answer them if i can. I work for mason county garbage so i know a little about the topic :)

There is an article in the July edition of Trains Magazine titled "Moving Trash by Train" which should be of interest to you. The article gives locations of some of the loading/unloading facilities.
CSX has a Trash train D765 Dickerson, MD - Derwood, MD which is a double stack trash train. Do a Google for Waste Management & Republic sites in NYC, Washington DC, and South Carolina. Some of the trash is used as supplemental fuel at incinerators to generate electricity. Happy dumpster diving!

While I think they use custom containers/cars (I have only seen gray containers), you could look into the run from the Shady Grove Transfer Station to Dickerson in Montgomery County, MD.

Great Idea there Joe and i will keep an eye out for your Module as i've always wondered how they are handled loaded/unloaded. I know that Joe put and awful lot of time and effort into these Car's and Container's so i hope your idea comes to fruition mate.

This is the Rabanco facility in Seattle in Google:

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=raban...13,-122.567596&sspn=0.388543,0.63652&t=h&z=17

Here it is in Bing. Their Bird-eye view gives a great look at the facility:

http://www.bing.com/maps/?v=2&cp=rxwhcm4t560w&lvl=18.158844649556404&dir=359.68655460169913&sty=b&q=rabanco%20&ss=yp.rabanco~pg.1~rad.0,247119784781971&form=LMLTCC

Basically, it's just a couple of large, open steel buildings with mounds of trash inside.
Up here we use standard containers with canvas tops, loaded on regular double-stack cars. Loading is done with the large top-lift style of forklift machine. You can see one of the machines on the Bing site. Track layout is just a siding off the main with several tracks to spot cars on.

That Bing map is a great pic there Todd but do they take like General Waste there at that plant then sort it out into the various recyclables to be trucked elswhere, Or do they just get Train loads of Recyclable's as you can see different types of bundles there in various places at that plant waiting to be forwarded to where ever they send them to be re-made into new plastic/paper/glass etc.
Cheers Mick.:D

As far as I know....and I can only speak for the WM facitiy in Bremerton and the Mason County transfer station....cause those are the only ones i dump at.

For the Mason County transfer station here in washington...we dump our trucks directly into the containers and then they are transported to a rail yard for loading onto well cars.

For the WM facitly....they offload empty containers from well cars at the facility the truck them to the load area. There is a big building where we dump our loads on the floor. Then they use a loader to push the garbage into a hole that the container sits under. When the container is full the move it out and pull another one in to replace it. Then the containers are loaded onto the well cars that the empties where taken off.

Here is a shot of the railroad PSAP moving garbage containers around Bayshore Yard. I have more pics of the containers and what not if anyone is interested. Was trying to get someone to make them for me because I am working on the PSAP route from Elma, WA to Belfair, WA

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Hope this helps you out.

Wow, lots of information flowing here! Thanks!

Bill, thanks for the picture and the link. I'd like to see more if you have em.

Thanks Mick. We'll see how this goes. I'm pretty bad about starting a project and never finishing it., but I'd really like to see those JR garbage trains get put to good use.

That facility accepts construction debris, yard debris, clean wood waste, tires and regular Municipal Solid Waste - all by truck. They sort out recyclable stuff like paper, cardboard, etc. Those items are trucked out to be recycled. Anything headed to the landfill then get loaded on the train for shipment to Roosevelt, WA where Allied Waste has a big landfill.

Ok I dug up some pictures of the Containers and such...only was able to find one of the facility in bremerton though and its not very good (took it before i was a garbage man lol). Well try to get some better ones in the future.

If you want them just pm me with your email and i will send them

Join the club Joe LOL...I'm exactly the same mate i have that many half started projects it's not funny, But as long as ya having fun mate thats all that counts.
Sum really good idea's here for Garbage/Trash/Recycling so i reckon we can get sumthing sorted. I like Todd's Rabanco Facility as a loading point for the JR Car's and Container's then maybe another Facility like Bill's where they could be say unloaded and Trucked to a near by Landfill. Well i'm going to try and get sum building's made this week and we'll see what i can come up with. Thanks for the info too Todd i'lll have to try and track down sum more on this Rabanco Facility.

Sounds good to me...I well get some pics of the Bremerton Facitly when I dump there on friday.

just as a side note...i am pretty sure the Rabanco site works the same as the Bremerton site from looking at the pictures. You have a lot to unload and load containers onto the well cars using a piggypacker. The garbage tucks pull into the facitly and dump the garbage on the ground. Then it is loaded into the empy containers. Then the loaded containers are put onto the well cars and transported to the landfill.
