Fundraising for content creators -- what are best practices?

These days there are a variety of platforms (GoFundMe, Patreon, Kickstarter, PayPal, Venmo, etc.) that offer solutions to fundraising for content creators.

Are there any recommendations about what works best for this community? Perhaps collective wisdom can be distilled into a guide of best practices for content creators seeking support.
