FTP problem with content Manager

Trainz Veteran (TEG)
It has been 4 weeks now since I purchased Trainz 12 and Content Manager version 3.6 that came with Trainz 12 has never worked for FTP from the DLS. I have set all the Trainz .exe's to go through my firewall as mentioned in the following thread:
http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?t=57459

I even turned off the firewall to no avail. Content Manager verifies me when I start it up and will show me all of the DLS content properly. I am running Windows 7 so I set everything to run under administrator as suggested in one of the threads. When I run the Network Diagnostics from CM everything passes except for the two FTP tests:

Message: Test 'command prompt access' passed.

I do not have a Firstclass ticket yet so that would fail anyway. I can successfully download using a separate ftp client that I have but that is a pain as I have to download any dependancies separately. Any suggestions on fixing this problem are appreciated.

Cheers,

Derek

Check that your firewall software is not blocking any parts of Trainz.

Depending on your expertise with computers, the likely port for FTP is 21. (This may or may not mean much to you)

Can you download content using the web-based Download Station (using the Download via FTP option)?

Shane

Hi Shane:

I did shut off my firewall completely and the FTP still did not work from Content Manager to download from the DLS. I have no problem downloading from the DLS using a different FTP client called Free Download Manager and I can also download using Firefox from DLS with no problem. Any thoughts?

Yes I ran the Network Diagnostics again and received the same results as you see in the first post of this thread (Error: Download failed - error 2). That has been the same result since I installed Trainz 12 around Nov 20, 2011! Have you ever heard of this problem before?

Anyway thank you for your thoughts on this problem. If I find out a solution I can let you know. You might want to put it on your Trainz tutorial site?

Cheers,

Derek

If you do come up with a solution I will be adding it to my tutorial website.

(Also, if I come up with the solution, I will do the same (after posting here)

Shane

Might be - the solution for that issue is on my tutorial website.

I've also had a thought of whether something external to the computer (a router perhaps) is blocking it.

Shane

There's a reason for that.

The FTP server is configured to hide the majority of the content.

The Manual Transfer method must be used to download any Download Station content if you are using a FTP client.

Shane

Thank you for the further suggestions. Just to sum up what I have done to this point:
  • I am running Windows 7 and I have set the following to run under Adminstration: Content Manager.exe, Trainz.exe. TADDaemon.exe, TrainzUtl.exe
  • I CAN download from the Download Station using Firefox, Google Chrome
  • I CAN download from the Download Station using a third party FTP client called Free Download Manager
  • When I startup Content Manager it states "Validating your username with Planet Auran..." and successfully logs in. If I move an asset into the download box it downloads the thumbnail and successfully searches for the size of the download and also lists any dependacies.
  • I do have a router and I did a test bypassing the router and plugged my laptop directly to the internet. That failed as well
  • I have run the Network Diagnostics test from Content Manager with and without the Router in between. I always get the same results as I have posted at the top of this thread (Error: Download failed - error 2. Error: Test 'ftp dls' failed.).
  • I have set up my Windows Firewall to allow Content Manager through the firewall.
  • When I start a download it spins for a while and then fails, offering to "Retry".
  • After I returned my Internet connection to go through our wireless router I checked the router log files. The router is making FTP download requests to: 174.121.103.178, 174.121.103.179. I assume that these are the correct IP addresses?
So that is where I am right now. As I mentioned, I can download by other means but then I have to download each dependancy separately and that takes me through several browser screens each time! I would certainly like to get Content Manager working to save a lot of time.

The one other thought that I have is that I did a digital download of Trainz 12 and I am using the serial number to that download. If I start up Trainz and go to "Options" under "General" it lists my serial number but also has a box for "CD Key". Do I need that as well?

Cheers and Happy Holidays,

Derek

Are you logged on in content manager? If there is a bar at the bottom of CM, this could be the problem.

Another thought I've had - have you installed the hot-fixes for TS12? One of these may fix the issue if you haven't already installed them.

Shane

Regarding the last three posts:

Malc: Good to know that my Serial Number is all that I need!

Privite: Yes I have no problem logging in to the DLS. There is no bar at the bottom (I know what that looks like because I tried removing my username and password and the red bar appeared at the bottom). As I mentioned above, when I start up Content Manager it validates my username etc.

Shane: I installed all three patches so I am up to build 49922. When I first installed Trainz12 I thought that might be the problem.

Cheers,

Derek

I still can not get CM to actually download anything.

I am running Trainz12 build 49922. At this point I am considering reinstalling Trainz but I do not want to lose the state of my database (I have downloaded many assets using FTP through my browser directly from the DLS). How do I back up the current state of my installation (what subdirectories do I backup etc.). What about the Windows registry. Is there anything I need to know there?

Cheers,

Derek

I bought this from the Auran website as a digital downloaded. But since I installed it in late Nov 2011 the Content Manager has never been able to download from the DLS.

I have found the CM to be highly erratic as well.
Sometimes it searched for hours on end while the next time it finds the same file in a matter of seconds.
Sometimes it just stops downloading a large list of files right somewhere in the middle and when I re-enter my accountname and password it chugs happily along again. Weird piece of software.

My FTP download comes up with an error as well, as does the FCT test, eventhough I have a FCT active and I can download with broadband speeds and without the 100MB limit, so I just regard the network test as a bogus feature.

My tests comes up exactly the same as yours. The only thing is I can actually download files. It must be annoying that you still cannot.

Are your running some sort of Internet Security suite?
