frustrated with DEM creation

Hello All,

I am really frustrated right now. I have been trying to make some maps for my layout and am ready to pull my eyes out. I do not have the money to get TransDEM and have gone through the MicroDEM and HOG tutorial. Unfortunately, it was not created to work with TS12. All I get are empty worlds to work with - No bases, no light, no nothing! I am just about ready to give up, but I thought I would ask before I do. I am not very good with programming or computers-other than the basics. Can anyone out there help me out?

Thank you in advance!
Billy

OK - you have two problems - the tute was written for an old version of Microdem which is constantly updated and the newer versions are quite different. Google around and find the oldest version you can, it will be closest to the tute.

The second issue is twofold: the tute was written for TRS04 and in TS12 the route file structure is different, and the import procedure is different.

Good news though is that the basic principal is exactly the same, and the HOG procedure is exactly as described. There are heaps of threads on the subject, but the internal search engine won't accept a three letter parameter, so you can search neither HOG nor DEM. Use Google Advanced Search and set up the 'site or domain' filter for http://forums.auran.com and you will find lots of help....

I have found a copy of V10.o of MicroDEM. I seem to be having more luck with it. I will need a lot of practice, and a good learning curve, but I am getting some results now. I thank you for you advice and help!

Transdem is the best investment you can make if you want to build prototypical routes - I know times are not easy financially but - set against the cost of buying Trainz and a PC to run it on - it's not that expensive (compared to buying a 3D modelling programme like 3D Crafter) and it will repay the investment.
