From Red to Green

I just bought TS12 as my first time using Trainz. I'm doing the original Norfolk & Western - Appalachian Coal route and the Westbound Merchandise Train session that came with TS12. I'm stopped at a red signal at bluefield east 0004 switch. The bluefield Yardmaster has aleady cleared me to go to bluefield east 0031 switch but the signal is still red. after 2 hours it's still red. How do I get it to change green?

Jump out of the cab and check the points in front of you, one of them may need switching manually.

Points? you mean switches? if so all the switches say manual locked and I don't see any info on that in the manual. This is an unedited pre-built session which came with the game so I must be missing something that I did'nt do. You have the TS12, did it work for you? It doesn't make sense that a driver would leave his train and walk 4+ miles to check switches.

I also find it easier to push m to bring up the map and you can see which way the switches are set and you can change the blocking switch so you can proceed.

I think we've already established that manual control over switches is disabled in this session, so that will not work. Is the red signal between you and a set of rolling stock to which you need to couple? If so, you can probably ignore the red signal and couple to the consist. Though I wouldn't know if that's allowed in this session as I have not yet played it myself.

A lot of problems with built-in content arise from problems communicating with Windows. TS12 and all .EXE components need to be run in Administrator mode. To set TS12 to run automatically as administrator, go to C:\Program Files\N3V Games\TS12\bin (for 64-bit users, it's Program Files (x86)), individually right-click each .EXE and select "Properties", go to the "Compatibility" tab, and select "Run program as an administrator", then hit "OK" and follow the UAC prompt. (Warning: Do not attempt this if instances of any of these programs are already running.)

From outside the cab, when you hold the mouse cursor over the red signal, what does it say in the popup comment? Clicking on it will often take you to the offending switch or signal that is causing the problem. If you stop your train schedule, do the switches stay locked? Is there another AI train about the use the switch? It could be locking the switches.

Ok, here's what I got. Oh and thanks much for helping me. I know I can probably edit the route so as to cheat around this but I want the built in session to work!
I cursor over the red signal and it says "line ahead is unsignaled". I clicked on it and it took me to bluefield West switch 0005. I cursor over the switch and it says "manual control is disabled". No AI train around to use this or any switch.

Scottbe, thanks for the usefull administrator info. I didn't know what that tab meant. I have not changed the properties yet.

Another thing is I have not patched my copy to 49922 yet because I do not know if I should patch from my current version of 46957 to 49922 or patch from 46957 to 48249 and then from 48249 to 49922. I only see bits and pieces of information scattered about the Trainz forum so I'm confused. need help getting up to speed (I keep saying).

If they now have a direct patch from 46957 to 49922 it should contain the upgrades found in 48249.

Did you ever fix this problem Tim? I am waiting at the same spot and can't work out how to get the signal to change either.

When you look at Bluefield west SW 0005, is it set for or against you? If it is set against you, you could go into surveyer, set that one switch for yourself, then drive the session and see if that helps out. If the switch is set the wrong way by default, you will never be able to proceed past this point unless you fix it yourself. Though you want to run it as is, you still could remove/edit the rule that makes the juctions locked in drive mode. Or, in driver, see if there is a trackmark (on The satilite/map view)just past the juction you could momentarily use AI to drive/navigate to and once the train locks the juction, then remove the command to regain control of the train AND keep the turnout locked in your favor.

For what it is worth - If I remember correctly I just drove through the red light treating it as if I obtained permission to do so, like in some other sessions. I left the load at the red light after uncoupling the first nine, left the first two on the next line, placed trucks 3-8 where the instructions say , went and picked up the other trucks and brought them back , coupled to the two trucks I left on the adjacent line and hooked up the original load again and proceed to Flattop. It is not easy at all, it is a huge yard and I got lost several times ( the map is worn out :D )from West to East, or the other way around, I did not complete the session succesfully if I look under 'achievements' though, or it did not register like some sessions do.I think I got some speed fines on the way and I remember running out of coal too at Bluefield once.

I checked the signal and it said something about a train being on the line!!
I bet that's the rolling stock you are supposed to couple to. In that case, you have the permission of the yardmaster to proceed. Just CAUTIOUSLY pass the red and carry on with the current task you are assigned.

My Brain Hurts

Thanks for the reply.

OK. But as soon as I steam past the red I get a violation and it pops up and says I can't complete the scenario with any rule violations... sigh...

Has anyone out there ever completed this scenario successfully?

Cheers Everyone

It looks like to me that there is an error the setting of the points in the trigger that gives clearance into the yard.
The trigger JunctionSetter_Bluefield_Yard_Entry waits for the train to stop and then displays the yardmaster message. After 25 +-20 seconds it sets junctions through to the yard exit (which has a red signal). Most of the points are locked except for the ones needed for the shunting.

The setting of one of the junctions needs to be editted to give a clear path through the yard. This is done in the Edit Session menu of the Session; I suggest doing this on a copy of the original session.
Under the JunctionSetter_Bluefield_Yard_Entry trigger:

Bluefield Yard West 0005
is set to Right and locked. This needs to be changed to Left & locked.

Then after 5-45 seconds the points are set as required and the yard entry signal changes to yellow. You can then proceed into the yard.
The exit signal is cleared by another trigger when the train is correctly assembled.

I haven't had time to try the rest of the session to completion but being able to get into the yard helps! I'll let you know how I get on.

Andy
