Frieghtcar Reporting Marks and Data

Hello All!

I have two questions. I am looking for information or a website that has data information of frieghtcars: capy, ld wt, lt wt, etc. Can anyone help me with this?

Second question: what is the name of the multicolored sorting plate on the side of frieghtcars? I believe it is used for humpyard sorting and inventory control.

Thanks for your time!

If you are doing a railcar from the 70's or early 80's, the colored plate is an ACI plate. They are obsolete now, replaced with AEI which is an RFID block that can be read by trackside transceivers. Read about them here and here.

Scott,

Bless you! I have spent a month looking for this information. You have provided me with exactly what I was looking for in the ACI tag. I also did not know about the AEI tags, which make a lot of sense. I am starting my first reskins and wanted to make the tracking marks correct. I know now that I need to merely place the RFID block on the side and a reader track side. Thanks you very much.

For modern North American railcars go:

I did a personal reskin of caboose and I went all out for what I had to reskin. I took the actual ACI elements and built the ACI plate for the number of the caboose. I even found Penn Central's prefix for it too. Although I know it was an accurate ACI plate for the caboose, by the time it got scaled down to put on the TGA, it wasn't detailed enough to make out. Figure even if you are using a 1024x1024 TGA, it will have both sides, roof, ends, and bottom of the car as well as often other details like handrails, etc. The ACI plate might only end up being 8x24 pixels or so. It was an interesting learning experience though!
