FRA takes Cell Phone Action

I think it would be wiser to install an in-cab signaling system on American trains, or at least some device similar to the German INDUSI system which stops a train if it runs a red signal without permission. It probably wouldn't be as cheap as in-cab security cameras, which by the way will ruin any future chances of cabrides, but it would certainly go far in preventing future accidents which could have been prevented with this technology.

1 - It should be made a requirement to have a second engineer, the benefits are neccessary, the reasons why some places like the military does it prove the point. You have a second person to operate the vehicle in emergencies and you can cover each other in some situations (how does an engineer use the toilet in the middle of a long run if he's the only engineer?). Not to mention it helps not only with the employment situation but also from the psychological/stress viewpoint that is considered today, having a second engineer alleviates a certain measure of loneliness and its negative effects.

2 - I hate cell phones. I've been rear-ended twice when there already is a ban in this area against cell use when driving. And the one time I had a work related one, I drove 2 hours one way to Philadelphia on several occassions and every time I would get my boss calling me just so he could ask if I arrived yet and to get there faster then he complained if I didn't answer. I told him a few times cell use was banned while driving and I would not get a ticket just to answer the phone, he responded that I should pull over to answer. I said, "So you want me to pull over and stop making my 2 hour trip take longer just to tell me that I need to get there faster?" He actually said yes resulting iin one of the reasons I left along with developing my hatred of cell phones.

I would be very happy if the government shuts down cell phone services because people ignore laws banning use of cell phones while driving/operating vehicles/machines.

Yes Ed, I heard about that...thanks.

 Here is the entire 30 page FRA "Emergency Order #26" in .pdf.

It covers the study of electronic communications & electrical devices for back about a decade.

what

No, but seriously, cell phones are a very useful thing. Millions of people depend on them each day. Cell phones save lives in some cases. Cell phone service providers are also now an integral part of the world's economy, and to shut them down would further destabilize the current weird situation.

THINK before you post.

Maybe so.:o My cell phone is a glorified answering machine. I think Joe Walsh said it best, "Just leave a message maybe I'll call.":hehe:

I am sure he did think before he posted:) I tend to agree with him. Cell phones are a PITA. They are the ultimate nuisance. I have to have one for work and I hate it. People calling me all the time usually interrupting the current conversation or task that I am performing. Not to mention what health effects the towers and signals are having on the human body. No one has proven 100% that there are no health effects. Sure they may have saved some lives but they have also taken some lives. If the reports are true about the accident in the US then there are 25 families of 25 people who wish cell phones did not exist.

Priorities...

:o Aside of the mandatory cell phone requirement of work, all I see is a "don't apply to me" un-disciplined mentality of cell phone users in traffic, cell phones ringing during meetings that ask cell-phones, beepers, etc, be turned off.

I left by bank the other day & two well dressed businessmen were in a SUV ahead of me & the driver had a cell phone to his ear whilst attempting to enter traffic on a busy city street!:hehe:

Cell phone charges are huge & do not pay-off in convenience. Text messaging started out being free. If less cell phones were sold, rates would drop.
