Flatcar express

Midland

Sphenodon Punctatus
An early evening east of Sundermeyer and the stillness is broken by the distant wail of a chime whistle and a steady thrumming of the rails. With a roar and a clatter 13 and 17 charge onto the bridge at the foot of the grade with a long train of flatcars for VanDenH. Fresh out of the Midland Fabrication Shops the cars already look a little worn and used...

Some cars are not fitted with stakes although the holders can be seen bolted to the side beneath the deck.

Other cars have the large wooden stakes fitted.

The decks are strong durable hardwood bolted to the frame and capable of handling all kinds of heavy loads.

Handgrips are provided and painted for easy visibility and footsteps are also placed on each corner of the car.

The cars, riding on conventional trucks, are particularly smooth and even fragile loads can be carried with certainty.

And at the rear the obligatory caboose.

There is still numbering and lettering to be fitted as well as the underframe gear (air reservoirs, brake cylinders and triple valves etc) but it shouldn't be too much longer before these 52' flatcars can be released to general circulation.
