FIXED/SET TRACK

I have three routes on the DLS, with two more coming soon. So far they've all been received pretty well by the community. But the fact is, my track work is pants, especially on curved sections.

For a while now I've been laying 'Fixed' track first, and then replacing it with normal track of my choice. But that still gives unsatisfactory results. I think this is down to the particular 'Fixed' track I'm using.

What other 'Fixed' track do people recomend? Or, what is the best template to use?

Thank you for your help and advice.

hi, i hope i can help here, this is how i do bends as i remember reading a post on this a while back and found it very useful

curveegvf6.jpg

On the inside track you can see it is a full 90, i know its tight just for demo, this is the method i found to be most useful, use the ruler to set out a right angle as shown to the radius of the bend and add another dead centre then place the spline points at the ends of the ruler, straightening the track leading upto the bend.

i find its quite important to use this method as much as possible, the middle track is a shorter bend but i have kept the spline point at the 45 degree point.

as you can see from the outer track the placement of the spline points is most important, if i placed a spline point half way between the 1stpart of the bend and the 45 degree point it would be ok, but does get harder the shorter the bend gets

hope this is what your asking for

cheers

another method i use when i cant plan ahead

here i had 2 straight tracks which were already in place i needed to link them together, i created a model in gmax to give me a straght edge which i use for this, but there is plenty of content on the dls which can be used for a straight edge.

the models were placed in line with the track, at the point at which they met i used the ruler to measure the same distance either way to the straight track, placed a spline point, deleted surplus track then joined the 2 sections together, this gives me a good curve also

cheers

i found all my problems solved when i started using the items from andi06 122285. look up the JK items. he also has a full set of animated turnouts that will work with both 2004 and 2006. if you want nice smooth and even spaced track and curves then look at the jk way gauge set.

Curves

Hi Chris,

The key point which no one has made here, the straight pieces of track at each extremity of the curve shuold hve the track straightening tool used on them. This way they will not move or assume a curve when another piece of track is joined to them.

I am having the same trouble with a layout i am building at the moment. I have a double track section I wish to put around a 90 degree curve but can't seem to accomplish it. I have read some of the posts here and also some tutorials on the community websites but can't get the lead up track to straighten. I have tried both double and single track in the lead up (double doesn't respond to the staight track tool and the single still takes a left turn before heading around the right hand curve I am building). Templates aren't any good at the moment with space on the HDD at a premium at the moment. Can anyone make any futher suggestions. I've tried all listed here to no avail. I get the left hand kick before the right hand curve.   :'( :'( :'(

I use a few tools for tracklaying and with them I have track that looks really good for what I WAS doing. I use some curve tools from bald (150m-500m) and the track length and radius templates from bernardus_61 (only that which starts with Sj, don't use the FT stuff). And for switches I use the switch templates from ChWerwick. Combining all this I now have professional looking track. It just needs practice with some of the stuff though.

Straighteneing tool

Lenice, make sure you haven't got two straightened sections adjacent to each other. That doesn't work.

The other point about a straightened section is that the tangent line of the track joined to it lies along the straightened section, so you get a smooth transition to the curve. Doesn't apply to bridges unfortunately. But it does to turnouts, so you can get both arms diverging smoothly.

You can't combine single and double track for curves. It won't work, as they're not splines that will communicate with each other. Try using single track for both tracks, in the curve and on the straight before the curve.

The straight edge here is a good idea we could do with one of those in the tools section of surveyor

hi, could you post a pic, you must be doing something wrong, either the two adjacent sections like said in earlier post or your straightening the wrong section,

cheers

Thanks for the suggestions all. Your suggestion Athox seemed to come out the way that I was looking for. I came up to the curve with the double track then used single track for both tracks in the curve and the double track lead didn't budge an inch. Thanks for the assistance again all. One thing that I have enjoyed about TRAINZ is that if you get stuck, the Forum is here to get help. Have solved a few problems here and can now add another to the list.
Thanks
Glen
