First route: questions

Good morning/afternoon/evening, everyone!

Even though I've been around for a while and love Trainzing, I've not had the time to create a route in Surveyor. Due to recent real-life changes, I now have lots of free time and desire to create small, model-railroad type routes.

My question is first, how can I limit my use of assets to only built-in items or on the Download Station? I've acquired a LOT of payware and freeware which may be difficult to locate. I have experienced the frustration of being unable to find assets and wish to avoid that if and when I decide to share.

Next: I own both TS10 and 12. Which version is better/easier to use in Surveyor?

Thanks in advance!

Always happy to see someone experienced with the game jump the route creation wagon.

I cant give a perfect answer, but I can help you on this one. What I did was make a filter in surveyor and set that to "build-in = true". For TS12 that will "limit" the amount of items to 16.664 (or 16.131 if you also ignore the updated items), which should still be enough to get you going untill someone gives you a better answer.

I dont have TS2010, so I can not judge for the differences in surveyor, however: By default I would suggest to create in the latest version as the support of that version will be the longest standing. In other words: If N3V puts new versions of Trainz on the market, they will drop support of older versions in order of appearance, so 2009 then 2010 and TS12 being the last.

Good luck with creating.

I would always go with TS10 over TS12 simply because of the option of using compatibility mode. These days I hardly ever do, but it's there if I want it.

On the restricted content issue I would install a second version of whichever program you decide to use and restrict content in the second install to just built-in and DLS. You can pretty much have as many installs as you like, they will quite happily co-exist. I have both TS10 and Ts12 installed twice, one of each is the install I use day-to-day, the second is a built-in-only copy I keep for testing new routes....

I did exactly what Andy suggested for developing my routes and it works very well. On top of ensuring you won't get any hard-to-find content accidentally inserted into your routes or sessions, the game probably will actually run a bit faster, and overall content management is much easier.

I'm currently developing in TS2010. Although TS12 has the satellite view which can come in handy sometimes, I find it's best to develop in the lowest version of the sim you plan to support to ensure compatibility.

If you have not modified the content from the download station, then using the filter 'locally modified = false' will show only built-in or DLS content, that is unmodified. Also handy if you wish to avoid DLS content that you've fixed errors on (this avoids having to ensure others need to fix errors).

... unless you have archieved everything and tried to restore your TS12 after a re-install by running those archieves. Then almost everything will get the "locally modified" flag.
