I have two sub sims I've been trying to get into, 688I and Sub Command, as well as some flight sims. But Trainz is by far the most addictive. Welcome aboard!

The thing about a digital download, versus a hard Disc of Trainz ... How do you save and safegaurd the Digital Download to a DVD-RW or CD, in case that Trainz gets corupted, if you need to uninstall Trainz and re-install ?

And can a digital download be loaded into a newer PC, should you get a new replacement PC.

You can just burn the digital download (TS2010, and, I think, TS2009 as well) to a DVD. Trainz does not use any significant form of DRM/copy protection. Therefore, you are able to backup your downloaded copy. It's not like many games in which you have to have the original install CD, do some form of goofy "product activation", etc.

It gets even better: You can back up an INSTALLED version as well. In fact, my full version - the one with 60Gb worth of installed assets and about 100 routes installed, as well as 2 I'm working on - is backed up to two spare drives. If I need to recover my Trainz (and I have) then I can just copy the backup back to wherever and use that copy.

Note that this only applies to a copy of Trainz that comes from AURAN/N3V. Some other versions use copy protection/DRM, some don't, and it may be applied differently e.g. may not prevent backup before installation but may after.

Well Auran/N3V has my orders from 2009 forward still On their system for download. You can put the files onto a DVD or flash drive or really any other kind of media for safekeeping. I reinstalled 2010 four times now with no issues from the 8 GB flash that I keep trainz and all my payware on.

The steam version you should be able to put on any machine, they claim they have a backup archive application that helps you offload your games on to DVD but I've never tried it.

But as far as the direct download from Auran/N3V it's the same files that you're going to find on the DVD. No more no less…

I have to agree. This is a refreshing and encouraging first post.

Welcome to Trainz and the forum. It's a great community and there's lots of folks here willing to help. Yes, you'll wind up needing help on somethng as we all did. This is one of the most satisfying past-times that I've ever found and you'll soon find many hours passing when you think it's only been minutes. It's so addicting that we may need to develop a half-way house for some.:hehe:

Again, welcome

Mike

Perhaps we need a new thread named:

The End of the Beginning.

This would mark the end of negative posts about N3V and their success in overcoming their financial crisis and their ability to produce quality Trainz versions like TS2010 and the new, soon to be released, TS2012 release going forward.

I know exactly how Ken feels. I'm a newbie and between playing with my new train set and all the help and support the Trainz community has offered me is pleasantly overwhelming. It reminds me of an old modular model railroad club I was in years ago. Members would go to each others house to help other members with their modules and then week of the shows everyone pitched in to build the "monster" again and again. I see this in this hobby and its refreshing seeing the old hands helping out the newbies and putting up with all the question we pose them. Thanks everyone!

You'll find you will be learning something new everyday as the sim opens up to you. I think the greatest thing about this sim is it offers you the chance to create the railroad of your dreams that due to space or budget you never could have.
