Hey skidmark22.

I have a question.

In the first screenshot, why are all the tender engines running WITHOUT tenders?

That is all.:)

I changed the smoke configuration on a couple of steamers on my hard drive a few years ago. Then I changed them back...for the simple reason that a steam locomotive doesn't put out a huge volume of smoke if it is being run properly. Thermodynamically, a lot of smoke indicates inefficiency in converting fuel into work. Most pics (not all) that show huge volumes of smoke being emitted from the stack were made for the dramatic effect in the photo and the photographer's benefit. Here's a pic I took last month of UP 3985 running through my neighborhood at speed...

...not a lot of smoke there...and it was doing between 50 and 60 mph.

Cheers,
Fred

GRRR. don't bring that up.

sorry, but the 3985 stopped for the day in my hometown on that day, and I only found out after a railfan friend told me she was highballing out of town. Lovely. I could have gone down and blown the whistle on the biggest operating steam engine! AARGHH!!

but, there is a catch to what Zorronov said. when you're going up hill, you want smoke, because that means the engine is working properly and is leaning in to the train.

yeah, been hangin' around Chama too much.

Here is a Good Short video of the 3985 workin'. You also have to consider coal or oil fired. The coal burners put out a lot more smoke.

Point well taken Shane...nice video. The first one looks like a pretty steep grade. Trainz doesn't model smoke output versus load...so I accept the smoke configuration of the modeller rather than changing it. I trust what they decide is a happy medium between flat grade and steep. :)

Cheers,
Fred

P.S. The second one says "with maximum smoke" so I would guess, once again, that the engineer did it intentionally.
