Smoke/Tender Fail!

@hope5

Hi hope5.

I’ve put a smoke generator in the engine shed. I got it from DLS. From memory it’s by Richo. It’s one of the better ones which puts out the plume of smoke from the end of a big 1m long “match” which you can find later in Surveyor if you want to move or delete it.

There’s also one which generates a VERY big cloud with a source “block” around the size of a fingernail, coloured the same as the grey baseboard, which is nigh on impossible to find again. Choose wisely!

The kuid of the one I’ve used here is kuid:101031:60048. I’ve left it in the shed where it wafts smoke around in a changing cycle, mainly in one direction, but then randomly shifts. It’s a nice effect when entering or leaving the shed.

For taking the screenshot I used the pause (P) button in Driver from a fixed camera. It’s also possible to start each loco, slowly, to get the smoke and steam effect from each. When mixed with the smoke generated from the “effect” asset you can get some quite nice screenshots. I’ve taken loads.

@ robd

Hi robd.

Yes – quite correct – the tender is back to front. I did spot it after posting but thought I’d got away with it.:o

I get the uneasy feeling that one of Deane’s Jersey cows, just to the right of the two shorthorns, may just have spotted it first though!

Cheers both

Hi Casper

Are the landscapes in your screenshots your own creations? That last one with Evening Star is really stunning, so realistic, almost photographically real. It inspires me to have a go myself!

Hi Rob,

All my postings are from my own routes. I’ve only ever downloaded one – to see how one of the experts did it, and went from there.

Most of my assets are from the DLS with some from third party sites – all freeware.

You really should have a go at Surveyor. It’s an extremely creative tool, frustrating at times but also really rewarding. I’ve been at it a couple of years now, but use it pretty well daily during the winter months. I’m still amazed with what can be done with it.

Get stuck in! We can hopefully all look forward to seeing some postings from you some time soon.

Cheers

Hi Casper

Will do, I'm having a go at the Llangollen Railway, a place I haunt frequently, could take a while to complete though.

Cheers,

Rob.

Hi hope5.

Nice work! Good to see another “smoker”. (The healthy version that is; not the filthy weed which I thankfully gave up 38 years ago).

What are the two locos and where did you get them? I’m not sure I’ve got those. They’re perfect for a smoky environment.

BTW You’re very topical with the snow. We had around an 8in fall overnight here in Hampshire.

Cheers

Hi yes i am starting to make my sheds smoke luckily not the bad version though.
The loco further away in the picture is one of stainers 8f 2-8-0s made by lms man (payware)
and the nearest one is paulhobbs fowler 4f (freeware allso comes with trainz 06 but i think you can download it onto 04)

Hi skidmark22.

Great progress on the change of smoke! That looks much better.

Was the solution a config.txt edit?

Some of the puffs look a bit “blocky” though. You shouldn’t be getting that. Have you tried switching between Open GL and Direct X?

Very unprototypical – the Renfe 242f Confederacion loco running through my UK route:

and pulling american tank cars:hehe:

They are definitely non-English tankers. They have been re-bogied and re-skinned in the UK though.:D Good old PaintShed!

There are some Eastern European distant buildings in this shot as well, just to confuse things further.
