Download problems are getting nasty.

In my last request for 5 (limit set by someone at CM) covered hoppers I received one that was sent without a dependency and the following four items were as follows; "Animal feed", "Corn gluten fee", "corn gluten mea", "corn germ meal" in place of the other four cars. This type of response has occurred repeatedly over the last few days. By doing this treatment I must wait another day to recover what I lost when both versions of the game had to be completely uninstalled. It was on my hard drive in two different locations. The software was being updated first in one folder and next time in the other like folder. How that could happen is beyond me. I know this new tactic is happening because I use the same program I used for my model railroad and the railroad name and type of car need to match. The last thing I do is to list for myself the items I've requested from the download panel. Before this latest tactic, if I ordered more than five assets only the last five items would come through. The Trainz manual says you are allowed 100MB download but I've never even gone anywhere near that number. I was trying to turn over to my two grandson's a working setup but this will be impossible unless this practice can be stopped. Deisan

The 100 MB limit is for non-first class ticket holders. A first class ticket (FCT) costs about $22 per year and is periodically on sale. I've seen it as low as $8.00 per year on many occasions.

As far as users putting content up there with missing dependencies, this has always been an issue. Sometimes though the database does get out of sync, or the asset shows up before the dependencies which can cause issues. Usually waiting a day is all that is needed for the missing items to appear.

Now, regarding your current missing assets. What are they exactly? Providing the KUID for both the actual train car and the missing dependency is very helpful.

You will only get the items that you place in your 'download queue' along with any dependencies those items need.
Sometimes CM will miss a dependency but I find that rare.
Nobody "sends" the items, CM deals only with another computer.

I find the Content Manager very useful, it usually works fine! I can no longer go onto the DLS and download something and it go into my Trainz 2010 CM, as I think it's still linked to my TC1&2 CM (which I've no idea how to fix but that's another story) but searching on CM for assets usually brings everything up on the DLS anyway :) I suppose it could be your internet connection which is restricting how much you can download

deisan - if yu are having problems with missing dependencies, post the KUIDs here.

Jack - try my Trainz Protocol Changer tool to fix your CM issue.

While no one can stop you from giving your two grandsons each a copy of your Trainz TS12, you are effectively "pirating" the software, and not doing either of them any good, because they will not be able to access the DLS on their own, to update content, upload content, or update the TS12 product itself.

You would be much farther ahead to wait until it is on sale, and purchase several "gift" versions, that your grandsons can then register on their own, giving both of them full access to teh DLS and Forums, legitamately.

As for a direct reply to your current problem...Change your method, ditch the double copies.
--Use a single copy of TS12 to get the sim to the state you wish, then, as a last step, copy it to two seperate harddrives, as a finished product so to speak.

By using two installations, (if not done properly, by segragating them), you are asking for troubles from both Trainz and Windows.

As was mentioned, CM (Content Manager, AKA "CMP") is a program on your computer, not a drive-thru order board. If you are not getting what you select for download, you may not be implementing the software correctly...could be related to having multiple copies of the same TS12 version in the same location, or could be completely unrelated, but either way, there is no human interaction, other than you yourself clicking on the item you want to download.

Now, it may be bad communication on your part, and I will not assume that, but I have to ask...Are you using the "Black pages" (TRS2004 download station web site) to download content, or are you using the "Software Built-IN to TS12" CMP (Content Manager Plus) to download ?
--The answer might shed light on why you have a "(5) asset limit" instead of a "100Mb daily limit".

Let me know how you get on. You may only need the Trainz Protocol option if CDP and CMPA files are opening correctly from the desktop or other folders.

You miss the point completely. I bought the game for myself and my son that lives a few doors away. Since I can't enjoy it my son who has model railed with me since he was a tyke will take the computer (bought for the game purpose) to his house to try to get his two boys interested. I have pic's of what I sent and one of what I got back. This is the 4th day in a row that the downloaded items had no connection to rolling stock. Deisan

My son lives nearby and he has two sons. I got the game for Christmas last year because I had serious problems with my back with my model layout of over 40 years. I was hoping Trainz could take its place. The problem may have started with two versions of the game installed on my new computer. We found the same folders twice in two different locations. We even got a so called expert to come over and uninstall one of them. When he finished both versions were gone but with all the things I downloaded including 7 loco's that I purchased from Jointed Rail. So I'm trying to recover these items. Deisan

At least I know why I had so much trouble with this game The dates on the two versions were two days apart. I suspect now that my son tried to help and loaded the first one through windows. I had read in the Forum about then that it was suggested to install directly into a folder called N3V which I did. I never even thought that Windows would let you have two programs working at the same time. Gates never wanted to spend time pluging the holes. That's why Norton broke away from him and formed his own company to protect against the security of windows. But I'll tell you how we found it. We took my hard drive and hooked it up to a Sony Dos computer that I'm much more familiar with. A look at the files on the hard drive we discovered two complete sets of the game but not with the same info. It seemed to be divided between the two sets of folders. If I can match a 40ft cars with the same railroad and type of car that I have on my HO layout I have a random generated program that I wrote years ago to produce switch lists and way bills for an operating session. Single instance of programs such as Trainz is up to the application designer and not the operating system. In some cases, such as with Office applications, a user may need more than one copy running. When the user attempts to open the same document, however, there is a file lock in place to prevent multiple-users from editing the same file. This same file lock is put in place on shared documents when opened by multiple users in a networked environment. Why this is the case with Trainz running locally I don't know. I would never have two instances running unless I started two in error.

The security issues, in this case, have nothing to do with what you are seeing with Trainz. The current versions of Windows, including 8.x, are quite secure. The old days were much different and in part this was due to having everyone operate with administrative rights on the system. The new operating systems do not do this. With Windows Vista (yup that one too) and up, the administrator login in is separate from the user. If a user needs to obtain administrator rights for particular actions, the process is similar to a Unix user requesting root access. Like in Unix, a Window's user today is no more than either a regular user or super user. Even logging in while in normal boot up as an Administrator is not the same as it was with XP and below. Booting up in Safe Mode, however, gives direct administrator access similar to booting up the Unix Kernel and bypassing the login prompt to the root and console.

To JCitron I really enjoyed reading your comments and wanted you to know that it was informative and interesting to see how things have moved on. I was a computer software consultant all my life but I retired at 55 and I just celebrated my 84th birthday a few days ago. The wife and I wanted to travel and see all the wonders of this world. Which we did for a good bit of the time for the next 10 years. I only recently bought my first Windows computer just to try the Tranz game. I was even pleased to see your reference to Unix. That was one of the operating system I would recommend for PC's back then. I must confess that I keep forgetting I'm not dealing with a company but with a group of likeminded volunteers. By the same taken I can't accept that my problem does not stem from some human intervention. I never considered the "First Class Ticket" as I had built up my user data over six months. A little at a time. I think I should have realized that trying to recover what was lost quickly may have been better if I had gone that route. I had been collecting rolling stock that matched cars on the layout by railroad name and type. This allowed me to use the same program that I had on setting up operating sessions on my H.O. model railroad. I think after the first two days of locating matching boxcars and downloading them someone was trying to tell me something by making things difficult. At any rate thanks for taking the time to reply to my request for help. Deisan

Congratulations on your 84th. I don't think there are many of us at the sharp/top end. My 85th comes in two months.

I would recommend that you purchase an FCT, individual assets are becoming larger with increased sizes of textures and will use up your daily limit before you expect it.

Peter

Happy birthday, Don. This is great. You've been retired a little bit more than my lifetime! :) I've been in the computer hardware industry for 35 years and recently retired myself due to medical reasons. It's a bit different now without the steady higher income and not being as busy as I used to be, but I'm getting used to this I suppose.

The computer industry sure has changed even from the time I first started using real computers. I worked for a terminal maker who then made CP/M computers and later PC compatibles. I then had the opportunity to move on to support and used everything from CP/M to VAX VMS, Ultrix, and Solaris. I still have a few Sun Sparcs at home and I retired from Oracle, the company that purchased Sun Microsystems a few years ago. It was great working for the company, well what was left of it that made these great machines. If only to have gone back in time to see all this happen again with my experience I have now. Microsoft has changed as well with their increased security and other changes, some for the good and not so good, I mean the dumbing down of some things which makes doing what we would like to do difficult at some time.

I do agree with Peter and truly suggest a FCT. That will make your life a lot easier when downloading the assets you need. This, believe me, is not as difficult as it sounds once you get things settled down in the right places.
