Double 1GB of RAM equals only 1.5GB of RAM??

A while ago, 1GB of RAM was upgraded by doubling the memory, but shouldn't it show 2GB of RAM (not sure if it can handle more than 2GB though) & not 1.5GB?

Did you buy and put this RAM in yourself? Or did you bring it to a Technician and have them do it for you? If you brought it to a technician I would make 100% sure they put in a 1 Gig stick. I have never heard of that before, It should say 2 gigs, unless of course really there is only a 512MB stick in instead of a full 1 gig.

Otherwise I would just be stumped. Unless the manufacture of the computer has some sort of "cap", which isn't unheard of but never works, they just don't "support" having more then what they say.

For example my computer was made by Compaq 8-9 years ago, and Compaq says I can only have 1 gig of RAM total(2x512MB) However I looked up the type of mobo at ASUS and they said something different...I could infact have up to 2 gigs of RAM(2x1 gig) Although Compaq does not "support" more then 1 gig. So in short, if you did bring it to a technician make sure that they put in 1 gig and not 512, because they could have simply been fooled like I was by Compaq, till I finally broke down and said what the hell lets try it, worst that will happen is that the computer will reject it and I will have to put the two 512s back in.

Brought & installed it ourselves.

Here is what that part of the specs say:
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.40GHZ
3.39 GHz 1.50 GB of RAM
If I remember it was 1GB, but just to make sure, I double check later.

If you're running Windows XP, it'll only 'show' 1.5gb, but when your computer first boots and is doing the HDD detection/etc, it *should* show 2gb.

It's 1GB each. And I've just noticed that they have 4 memory slot thing-a-migs.

Now let's see if cleaning improves performance.

Not true, XP will show up to 3.5 Gigs or so if it is the 32 bit version. How do you think my computer has 2 gigs?:hehe::p

So Red_Rattler how did you upgrade the RAM? Did the computer already only have a 1 Gig stick in it, then you just put another 1 gig stick in? Or was the arrangement different when you had the first gig of RAM? (I.E. 2x512MB rather then just 1 gig stick)

Windows Xp Pro and below will diplay 2042 gigzz of ram..

Windows Vista and Windows 7 only shows 1.8 or below cause windows uses the extra ram to run windows aero ..

also if you look at your proccessor sped from running xp to 7 you will note that it drops also
