Does ARN Destroy Prototypical Operations?

I still have a lot of locomotives and rolling stock with ARN (Auto Running Numbers) activated. But what I really like are assets with ARN deactivated. Why? This way I can manually assign running numbers in Surveyor to locos/cars that actually stay with the cars through session saves/reopens and Iportal exchanges of trains from route to route. ARN destroys my manifests where a manifest lists the car type, reporting marks, and car number (50ft Box BNSF #123456 Paper Rolls) and trains are designated by lead loco number and direction (2208 North) since car and loco numbers are continually changing. Loads generally stay the same through saves/reopens and Iportal exchanges. Anyone have any thoughts/suggestions on how to manage manifesting with ARN consists?

Doesn't ARN have a tag in the config.txt which determines the range to use? Just change the range to begin and end with the same number.

In the config file you set the starting number in number-low, the ending number in number-high, the number color in number-color, and set always-check to 0 (zero). I have no idea what the last does but I'm pretty certain it needs to be there. Its also possible to change the number of digits without getting character overlap by deleting one or two underscores in the script file (but be darn carefull, lol).

If a portal works the same as putting a car on the tracks in surveyor I'd think the numbers would change every time but I've never tried it. Perhaps someone else knows the answer and will chime in.

To set a single number in ARN -

numbers low - 1234 (set as number you want)

numbers high - 1235 (set as one number higher in value)

will stay set in and out of portals.

this all depends on how the ARN was implemented i think. it will keep reassigning a new number each time the car is created unless the script that calls it only does it the very first time.

and since i am here i should say, all of my assets only call for a running number once. after that no matter how many time you save, portal, close or open a session it will have that same number. the script only calls on ARN if the traincar doesnt already have a number.

ARN is one of those back burner "Gotta learn to do this someday" things for me, got too many other things I'm still trying to figure out at the moment. Main advantage I see is that ARN automatically assigns SOME kind of number to an AI train spawning from a portal, with the regular assigned numbers they come out of the portal with a blank number plate.

The last version of ARN will save running numbers to the session, so you will have the same running numbers when you reload. I believe Wulf added that back in 2009 or so.
