I have read the specs in regards to trs10, but I am confused with video cards.

specs say nVidia 8600 or eqivalent. I can not find any one in New Zealand that sell's the 8600 card. Can someone give me any idea as to a good substitute video card.

I am currently runnng an XP (sp3) system with 2Gb Ram, nVidia 8500GT Silent video card with 512Mb Ram, Pentium D "Prescott" 3.0Ghz cpu and this is above the minimum specs, but is painfully slow in running trs10 and the graphics are slow at time (like frame by frame). any advice on a new build or an upgrade to my exsisting system would be welcomed.

My system has passed every test point in the trains diag program. (see below)

I've been running an 8400GS with no problems. Comparable video cards to the 8600, pricewise, are the 210 and maybe the 220, which come in somewhere around $50, as well as the 9400 series.

But if you have the money you might want to consider upgrading your CPU to some kind of quad-core model, like the Q9550. You'll should get more mileage from a CPU upgrade than a video card one.

Of course, seeing as you have a Pentium-D, that may not be an option with the motherboard you are currently using, despite having the same socket type.

Your CPU is single core, right? See if there is a way to get at least a dual core on that main board. If not, think about a new main board. TS2009 and TS2010 are alot less dependent on video cards and more on CPU than earlier Trainzs.
Meanwhile, limit your draw distances and try no shadows. Switch between Directx and OpenGL to see which is fastest on your system.
I see you have TS2009. How well does that work?

G'Day, I found that using Otto's speed tree immobiliser helped my below spec PC handle TS10 reasonably well, I did not like the way they moved either. Who has ever seen a trees trunk move in an average wind?:hehe:

Yes, curremt cpu is single core Hyper Threading.

TS09 was a bag of poop and I ditched it in favor of trs 06.

Looks like some hardware upgrade are sorely needed.

Thanks for your help.

I was using a GT 8500 1GB which while not having wonderful frame rates was usable with 2010 but with a dual core 64bit processor and Win7 64bit , since upgraded the card to a GT240 and the improvement is vast.
Incidentally I added a fan to the 8500 as it was getting a bit too warm when running Trainz which was causing one or two odd things to happen, with the added cooling it was far more stable.
