Differences between 2004 and 2006?

It's been ages since I played Trainz 2004 and I'm reloading it on my comp now. I was wondering about the 2006 version. Is it worth buying? Are there major differences/improvements? Is any of the addon stuff for 2004 useable on 2006? Any advice would be appreciated. :)

Over all TRS'06 runs a little bit better than '04 and there is allot of content that will not work in '04 that was made in '06. There were some issues in '04 that were fixed but other problems took its place in '06.
I found that CMP in '06 worked most of the time but can be very slow at times and sometimes getting it to get set up to work properly can be frustrating.

The graphics in '06 for me was a bit smother and more detailed.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Some people find the sound frequently fades or cuts out in TRS2006. Nobody seems to know the precise reason, so there is no certain cure for it. Fitting a sound card helps in some cases but not all.

Opinions are divided regarding CMP, which uses a database system for storing assets instead of TRS2004's kuid folders system.

I would stick with 04 for the time being, then purchase TRS2009 when it is released, which hopefully will have cured most if not all of the bugs that 06 has.

06 has iportal, and has better detailing then 04.

so u cna play online with friends, and meet new people also.

I am very used to 2004. Then I bought 2006, played around a wile, then deleted it and went back to 2004. Perhaps I am a bit conservative, but I saw no overwhelming plus in 2006. The main reason to go back was the CMP - Content Manager Plus. I like to go into the files, sort them, rework them, make my own items - TrainzObjectz was much easier to me than CMP.
Also sorting (and finding) I found in 2004 more flexible: You could name your own region/origin (i.e. "Old West" or "My own"), and the type/company. One of these options had disappeared in 2006 (can't remember which), which made grouping/finding for me difficult.
Perhaps it depends what you want and how you use Trainz.
Not much help ....:(

Thanks a ton for all the replies!!! I took the chance and bought the "Trainz:The Complete Collections". It includes 2006, 2004, Trainz Routes 1,2,3,4, Ultimate Trainz Collection, and Trainz Paintshed. This isn't a bad deal for me, even though I already own Trainz 2004. Turns out my Trainz 2004 CD-ROM didn't survive too well when I moved from Illinios to New Mexico a couple of years ago. Plus I didn't have Paintshed and the Routes. So that's an added plus. I didn't know a 2009 version is going to be released. Hope they make some major improvements and take their time getting all the bugs out. Oh yeah...I ended up paying $24.48 for the Complete Collections from Amazon. That's a LOT LESS than what I originally paid for Trainz 2004 (as in less than HALF!!!). Thanks again for the replies. You guys are great :Y:

The latest version of Trainz game engine TC3 is almost out, has a few extra features, a few less bugs etc. Probably worth a look at.

John,
Don't want to take this thread off-topic (and I'm not going to mention CMP in TRS2006 :hehe:), but do you know if the sound problem was fixed in Trainz Classics?
I'm probably going to get TC3 at some point, so it would be nice to know that it's fixed.

Having said that, there's no way of knowing if they've broken it again in TC3 really. :D

Smiley.

EDIT: My question was aimed at John259 really, but any John (or otherwise) would do. :)

Search the forum for problems relating to both 2004 and 2006, then eliminate the choice that yields the most hits.

LOL...I did that and it looked about equal. Popularity between the two seems to lean towards 2004 over 2006. I'll have both so I can compare.

I'm sorry, I don't know if the TRS2006 sound bug has been fixed in TC. Perhaps someone else could kindly provide that information?

One other comment regarding TC: it lacks many of the standard Trainz built-in assets but they can be imported from TRS20006.

One thing I wished they did, but they forgot

Now I finaaly got it running right with sp1 I found

They forgot to obsolote all any old content they updated and included in 2006. when you try to download a 2004 layot it downloads the old versions again, so you end up with 2 copys. the only way to fix it is change all the obsolete entry's your self. what a shame

I actually got my hands on a copy of Trains Classics and tried it out. Other than the passengers getting on the trains, I wasn't very impressed with it. If they made a patch for TRS 2004-2006 that allowed the viewing of passengers boarding trains, I would be a happy camper. But I doubt that that will happen, at least, not from Auran. Perhaps a 3rd party will figure out how to do it. One thing that was real disappointing about TC was the lack of content. TRS2004 had a LOT of content compared to TC (routes, activities, etc). Only thing I really liked was the New Haven stuff.

Now copy in the TRS2006 built in content to TC and you have the fantest most stable version of Trainz available.

It's called "Trainz Railway Simulator - Passenger Edition" released by 'Just Trains' :D

Shows you how long it's been since I used Trainz2004 :D

I upgraded to Service Pack 4 already. Is the patch in SP4??? If so, I'm off to make a passenger run :Y:

Is the patch in SP4?
Passengers fade in and out of platforms and IND-compatible passenger carriages, in Star Trek transporter style. They don't actually walk on or off trains. In addition, some passenger carriages have animated opening and closing doors.
