Did I blow power supply?

After a bunch of tests it looks as though when the PSU blew it took the motherboard with it :'(. I'm guessing the CPU is most likely dead too. Looks like it is time to save up for the big upgrade. It's a shame the motherboard is dead as I was going to send it to my in-laws in the Philippines.

Sorry to hear that. I've been in that position myself twice now. The most recent a few weeks ago when I munched a pin on a USB port which fried the Southbridge chip on the motherboard. Nearly $1600 later, and I'm up and running only a few hours ago. I spent the whole day building the new rig. The good news is it power up right away without issues, but I'm getting old... The components, pins, jumpers, and whatnot are so small I felt like I was trying to herd black ants out of a pepper shaker.

Have you tried unplugging everything else from the PSU other than the Motherboard, and disconnecting all the drive cables, could be a short in something else tripping the PSU cutout. That's graphics card and drives fans and anything else added. Worth checking if you haven't already. I've seen a sized fan trip a PSU.

Good idea Malc, I did have all the components removed from the motherboard except the fans as this is the only way I could see my rig try and power up. I did have 3 fans connected and all 3 tried to start. Sadly the motherboard speaker never uttered a single beep :(.

On the upside I will get to do my TANE upgrade ;).

That being said what would be a good motherboard, CPU, and GPU combo for TANE?

Dave,

Before we make suggestions, what kind of budget do you have? There is so much new hardware out there and some really, really nice stuff too, but it helps to have a starting point. For kicks you might want to check out New Egg www.newegg.com. I just got some parts for my replacement which I mentioned above. That cost turned out to be nearly $1700 by the time I took care of memory, motherboard, and processor. I was able to keep my video card and hard drives so I saved a good hunk. But I will add I did go to the high-end with a Haswell-E Extreme I-7. Perhaps this is overkill, however, I only replace hardware every 3-5 years anyway and plan on getting a good life out of this.

You might be lucky and be able to save your disks and perhaps your video card as well. This will save you a bunch, unless of course you want to replace your video card too.

Hi John,

I hope to salvage the ram, hard drive , and video card, but I think the video card will need to be upgraded too.

After looking and a number of motherboards and I still prefer Asus boards I think I found a good middle to high end board. It is the MAXIMUS VIII HERO https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/MAXIMUS-VIII-HERO/

One problem I think I may have is if the CPU will fit, but I feel it may have suffered the same fate as the MB :'(. With that in mind I'm looking at an i5 CPU and again middle of the road. The new rig will be built much like Johnny Cash said "one piece at a time" and spread out the pain of this unplanned upgrade. ;) With the price of SSD's coming down how can I resist? :hehe: So with that being said I guess my budget will be around $1000 to $1200.

If you budget $1000 to $1200, and like Asus, consider saving some more money to add to the budget, and get yourself Asus ROG G751 gaming laptop. Just a suggestion. I and others on here have them, and have no regrets.

Dave,

I would definitely scrap the CPU and memory as they probably took the hit with the surge. You might be lucky with your video card and hard drives, but test the components first. About 6 years ago, I took a big hit on a system. A relatively new power supply blew up on the inside, not figuratively either! There was brimstone, smoke, and fire inside my case when I powered on my machine one day!! This fried both my hard drives, motherboard, memory, and video card. It cost me another $1,000 to put together a system at the time. The only thing I saved was the case.

With a new build, you will want to go with the more recent components due to being better in many ways. The latest breeds of motherboards now support DDR4 memory, which is totally different than the old stuff anyway. If you are looking at an i5, go with the new Intel 6600K series. They're pretty spiffy and have a really high clock speed out of the gate.

The memory is reasonably priced as well, but you need to get RAM that matches your motherboard so I won't ballpark any prices for that. There are the usual speeds, but don't cripple yourself with the slowest either. The new motherboards with the Z170 chipset can handle up to 128GB onboard! When I priced that out for my system, it turned out to be $1700 because of the 16GB DIMMs needed in the 8-slots! I opted for 64GB for a lot less than that. In the end I got G:Skill memory which is rated very high and I've had good luck with it before.

Anyway, this might be a starting point. We haven't got to video cards and stuff yet. :)

Little update...

I just installed the Rosewell 1000 watt PSU and no joy :'(. When I hit the power button the fans start for a few seconds and then it shuts down.

Any ideas?

Dave
I once had a similar issues right after a power outage. Went to turn the PC on, then BAM. Power switch blew out. Both the PC and Computer Monitor were broken then.
