Deleting Routes

OK, I should know this but I don't . Say I want to delete a route for some reason. How do I get rid of all of it's dependancies while not removing the ones that may be used by other assets? My list f routes is growing and I am sure that I will start weeding them out soon.

You don't,....... never delete assets they are your building blocks if you ever start to build your own route you will need all of them, plus they will be in many other routes it would be foolish to delete them. The best solution is to store them on a bigger hard drive.

Deleting routes is easy, but deleting the assets is a pain because they are very interconnected with other routes including those that you've been working on yourself.

If you really want to do this, you'll need to investigate each and every asset using CMP. Before you delete the route, view dependencies. Then select view in Main. This will list all of the dependencies used in a particular route.

So far so good, right? Well now the fun part begins. You now have to click on each and every asset and view its dependencies. If it was only located in the route you want to delete, fine. You then proceed to the next asset on the list and repeat this process again.

As you can see this can become quite an undertaking, and is not something you'll want to do unless you really, really have to. Give this some thought before diving in.

OK, thanks guys. So I guess I won't be deleting any routes :hehe: . I was toying with this idea as I was thinking I could save some disc space by deleting some stuff I no longer was using but I can't chance messing with all my other add-ons that I like.

Which leads to another question, If I install a larger disc, or better yet, get a new PC, what's the best way to move all the assets over to the new install? I hate to think I would have to go through all I've done in the last month over again.

Hi Lou,
It is simple with 2006 just copy and paste, then go to the main trainz file (the pasted one that is.) now right click the trainz icon and drag it over to your desktop and choose create shortcut here. make sure it's in working order then delete the old stuff.

Hi thanks, but I think that's too easy lol. I lost my original install when I tried to move the program from an external to internal hard drive recently. My PC and TRS2006 did just not like it when I copied the files over to the new drive. There were too many references to the original install in the registry and the program just stopped working the first time I ran CMP. I've been recovering for the last month but am finally back to where I was and a little bit beyond.

Hi LouP,

Try this:-
1) Create an Archive of the route - and make sure that it includes all the non-built-in assets.

2) Select the route in CM, select all the dependant assets, and delete them, then delete the route.

3) You have now deleted everything related to that route.

4) in CM, select all the remaining routes, and check for missing assets - the missing ones should be in the archive you have created, so install them from the archive.

5) that should do what you want - you can then copy the archive to a DVD or CD and delete all of it from your PC.

Lou,.... Have you tried using a registry cleaner such as Ccleaner for example?

I've been tempted a few time to "just" delete everything I've downloaded - then I look at the routes I really like and think -"hold on - I'll keep that"....

The good thing about archives is that you can keep them anywhere (UB drive, CD, DVD, C:\ drive) - using the Contnet Manager, you can add or remove archives so that the system only sees the ones you want.
That's great for keeping a couple of routes + dependencies)
