Deleting baseboards on a mass scale

Is it possible to delete baseboards more than one at a time? Like probably a lot of others I'm deleting baseboards from the ECML route, but for a different reason as I only want Hull, York and Doncaster. I want to merge it with the Yorkshire routes I already have to have a realistic looking York and Hull. So unlike most people I'm not deleting the surplus boards I want to delete ALL of the boards south of Doncaster.

This is something I put in the suggestion section for a future version. I also have several thousand boards to delete on a route and sadly, it is a laborious task as there is currently no way to delete multiple boards. In TS12 it can be done from the satellite view but it is still a case of one at time.

I agree, we need something like this. In a 180 degree turn, I once suggested we need a way, as we begin a route, to specify how many boards wide X how many boards long we want the route to be and Surveyor will automatically lay out the route without having to go in and lay in one board at a time.

I hope the 'multiple board delete' lads are all running Crays, have you any idea the memory requirements for deleting mass boards on a completed route? Even one at a time you have to save often or you are headed for the desk-top.

@ Dave it would take only a few minutes to create dummy images to make a 'flat' blank route in HOG. Image pixel size is (#BoardCount x72) + 2. One chroma colour for the DEM image will make it flat, run a Teal line grid every 500 pixels on a white base for the Tiger image and set HOG board filtering to max...

The whole baseboard system is rather archaic really, but I doubt it can be done away with without ruining old routes.

That deleting from satellite view is a hit and miss and it is not as accurate as you think. Boards adjacent to the one selected will sometimes be deleted.

Dont do it as it can cause major problems. When you delete large amounts of baseboards you may leave behind some remnants which are left in space. This is what will cause a crash of the route. I always delete and replace a new baseboard when doing mutiple deletes and it has never crashed. Once all boards have been replaced I then start again and check each board for any spline sections that failed to delete, remove them and then delete the board.

Thanks for this tip. I have suffered from the hanging splines in space syndrome and this is clearly the solution.

True. I've had a lot of problems with TS12 crashing when I've tried it. I find the quickest way presently is to have the minimap open and select the board on that. It's still hellishly slow.

Splines in space sounds like a science fiction movie!

Yup I do the samething, Mr. Stagecoach. Bunch o'deletes, and go back and plunk down blanks to salvage the floaters. The funny thing is I've thought I got them all, then one day I see blue lines of track sitting in space between some baseboards! I then have to go on another salvage mission to get these little floating bits.

I agree this can be like treading on thin ice because you can end up deleting what you don't want to. What I do, which helps, is to click on the baseboard with a right-mouse click to ensure I'm in the middle of the board I want to remove.

While this thread is on deleting baseboards, my guess that in the majority of cases, what users (including the original poster, if I understand correctly) really would like is to be able to select x adjoining baseboards and create a new route, which then could be merged with or used as a starting point for a new route. It would be very useful to reuse the best parts of an route which we do not intend to develop further, in a new route.

Can I just ask what routes you are planning to merge with your remaining ECML?
Unless they were built the same way as the ECML route then you will have the major problem of ground height. Not all routes have been built using the DEM, HOG and what not, most people start on the flat boards which are set at sea level 0.00.
I remember trying to add a route onto the Preston-Carlisle route and it was miles down below the edge, had to give it up as a bad plan.
