Default F7 and GP7/9, too short in height?

Having messed around with the program for awhile and having downloaded the awesome geeps from CNR, I ask:

Is the default F7 and the JoshEH geeps too short in height?

I looked up the height of a F7 in my MR cyclopedia 2- Diesel Locomotives, the height of a f7, its 14 feet and 1/2 inches at the top of the cab, as measured from the rail head.

Same book lists the GP9 as a height of 14 feet 6 inches to the top of the cab, as measured from the rail head.

I compared the Stock f7 with one of CNRs MRL gp9s, and it is WAY shorter than the gp9

It appears than the gp9 off of the dls is the same height as the stock F7, which is shorter than it is supposed to be.

Was this done for a reason?

I tried looking for info here on the board, but came up empty.

Hi N8PHU, (Another ham operator I see, KC2RXO here)

The built in units to Trainz were not made using actual plans of the locomotives. A lot of the payware locomotives you will find are however, even some freeware.

Most things on the DLS, or freeware sites can be off in actual measurements due to the fact creators are not following a blueprint, CNR I believe does follow blueprints can not be sure though. Most are doing it by looking at pictures and modeling based on what they see. After the loco is complete they make sure everything is proportional.

First off CNR works for CN and drives locos for a living, so he can take measurements "at work".
Second I think most of us content creators use plans but and this is a big but the plans can be wrong, changes are made in production and over the years the railroad shops can make drastic changes. A lot of the locos I have made have had some part that the plans did not look like the photos, I am having that now with my Alco RS1, the plans show a plane block, photos have two round holes and a rectangular hole.

Thanks for the info.

I guess its time to load up GMAX and load a set of plans into it and see how I can manage........

Thought about making a F7 and F3 "Kit", kinda like the U30C kit that can be downloaded off the DLS. Time to crack open the gmax book I bought.......

73 all,

I haven't investigated the matter thoroughly, yet, but based upon the fact that some of the magnitudes of the differences suggest to me that maybe models which were made in one measurement system (metric) were improperly converted to another measurement system (imperial), or when they were in the process of being imported.

As a result of this observation, the very first content I created was a default mesh object (my software of choice is Blender, so the default mesh was a cube), so I could see exactly what size the default object was when imported into Trainz.
