Custom DEM map & Custom BaseMap

I'm looking for some help with a project I'm working on:

Specifically I need a DEM map (with tigerlines) for an area surrounding York,PA extending approximately:
5 miles North through 12 miles South, and from
6 miles East through 16 miles West of York.

I realize that is an area of 374 square miles, but obviously there is a lot of excess area included that I would chop off.

Once I have the DEM map (and have trimmed it) then I'm hoping someone can make some basemaps of the remaining region to assist in exact track, road, and building placement.

I have no experience with creating (though some with using) DEMs and although I have used basemaps before it has always been from a scanned in image, not from mapping software, etc.

Thanks for any assistance,

Welcome to the forums BYKW.

You might find what you need here.

The Fishlipsatwork terrains are already generated landscapes that are in Trainz format. You simply open up the route, and start placing track, trees, etc. on the landscape. They are generated from DEM files and have the TIGER lines on them.

Paul made quite a number of these "terrainz" and many additional ones are up on the download station as well.

In addition to these, a highly recommended investment is TranzDEM from GeoPhil. (Roland Ziegler). This software is payware, about $28.00 paid through PayPal.

TranzDem, which I am still learning to use, allows you to import the map tiles from the USGS along with photos from GoogleEarth, and generate import-ready terrain for placement of your track, roads, and everything else.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll have to check out TransDem.

I'm already a member of GAURC and have an extensive collection of terrains by Fishlips already, but none of them include York sadly.
