Crossings

Hello, I'm very new to Trainz and I am currently trying to build my first layout and I am already having trouble trying to figure out how to make crossings work. No matter how I place the crossing, whenever I try running a train over it, it does not react,(ie, the boom gates do not go down and the alarm bells do not ring). Can anyone tell me what it is I am doing wrong?

Sorry if this issue is already covered somewhere else in the forums. (I did try searching for key words with no luck)

Cheers.

EDIT: Forgot to say which version I was talking about. The crossing problem is with TC3

Hi Sedge - welcome to the wondreful world of Tranz. You haven't said which version of Trainz you're using? I have discovered, now that I have Trainz Classics 3, that some of the crossings designed for earlier versions have lost their animation.

Try experienting with different types of crossing - I know the built-in Tside Crossing (1 for single track, 2 for double), which has been around almost since Trainz was launched works, so do the US series called "Xing" by Rob.

Hope that helps - Ian

Hi Sterrett, Thanks for the reply. It's funny that you brought up the fact that I forgot to say what version I was talking about, I had just logged back into the forum to fix that mistake when I noticed I had already had a response.

I have TRS2006 and TC3, the crossing issue that I have is with TC3. I am using crossings that came with the sofware,so I assume that they should work. I am guessing that there is something wrong with how I am placeing them on the map. Or perhaps I need to place something else with the crossing in order to make it work.

Cheers.

are you actually connecting the track to it? you need to connect to it with single track and not double (if you are using double track stop laying track a little bit before the crossing then use single track to connect the double track to the crossing) try laying a road up to the crossing (make sure it is attatched) and drive a train across (in driver) if the cars don't stop and the animations on the crossing don't work you probably have not connected the track properly. if the cars do stop and the animations still don't work the it is a problem with the animation on the crossing object, and you will have to ask someone else about that (I don't have a clue!)

Yes it's funny Sedge, I have the same issue with TC3 and, yes, I do connect the track and the roads properly. I don't have any problems with other crossings, only the built in ones (UK Skirted Crossing or UK Half Gated Crossing by Bloodnok)

The cars stop, but the barriers don't close. The AI trains go to their respective destinations so that indicates the track is all properly fitted.

I did actually post under "TC3" but received zero responses!

I have noticed a couple of the Level Crossings I use (UK Full Skirted and UK Half Barrier) are no longer animated in TC3, yet worked perfectly in TRS2004/6.

The road traffic stops but the barriers remain open as the train passes.

Does anyone know if this is requires just a simple tweak to the config.txt file or is it a much more complicated task, please?

Thanks for the replys. To answer some of the questions I was asked, I was laying the track leading up to the crossing correctly and the crossings I was using were those that came with the software. I deleted the game and re-installled. It all seems OK now. Now I just have to figure out why every route I try to download has something missing:D. I'm assuming the download helper doesn't actually help all that much.

I'm assuming the download helper doesn't actually help all that much.

Yes it does!

When you have an obstinate route that tells you it has missing assets, go into Content Manager Plus and click the Search Tab. Highlight "Downloads With Missing Assets" and you will find the offending route(s)and other file(s) listed.

Highlight the Route or File you wish to examine, and Right click your mouse - select "View Dependant Assets".

This brings up a box which shows you which dependancies are missing (in which case you can search for them on the DLS by KUID) or broken (in which case you can Search for that asset using the Search Bar and choosing asset KUID - then you can highlight the offensive file and right click, this time choosing "View Errors".)

I would suggest, Sedge, spending a bit of time with Comtent Manager Plus getting to know its idiosyncracies - it is a very useful part of the Trainz kit!

A very worthwhile exercise is periodically to go to the "Search" tab and select "Faulty Assets" - selecting each file in turn, and selecting View Errors will tell you what is wrong. As you gain confidence, a lot of the time, these errors only involve a simple edit of the config.txt file or using "Gimp" to make the size of a .tga file the same size as its .bmp or .jpg "Alpha" channel.

Once you are confident you have all the assets on a route (sometimes you're left with an obstinate one that can'r be found) open the Route in Surveyor. In the left hand menu, once the route is open, you will see a selection "Delete Missing Assets". Choosing that option and then saving the file should get rid of the "Missing assets" nag.

Hope I've been of some help to you!
